In any field of inquiry, the beginner is more likely than the expert to
make important discoveries.【87】


Nowadays, more and more important discoveries were made by some beginners who were not famous or authoritative in his/her field. Some people claim that in any field inquiry, the beginner is more likely than the expert to make important discoveries. As far as I am concerned, the saying makes sense sometimes but not always.

Admittedly, compared to experts, beginners are lacking of knowledge and experiences in their fields. Yet sometimes disadvantages can be advantages. Beginners are those people who are curious and skeptical about everything and may question anything they do not understand. Their questions may seem so absurd according to the existing ideas and theories that no experts would ask the questions like them, but those seemingly ridiculous questions possibly are the key of new discoveries. In these circumstances, the plentiful knowledge and experiences are not priorities but the obstacles for the experts to make discoveries. The experts are easy to default something which are indeed problematical for they are too familiar with the field and the seemingly classical theories. In addition, the beginner have more initiative and enthusiasm to create and imagine, therefore they would have more chances to discovery something new. They are not afraid of failures for they are new comers and do not care about much, while the experts may care much more than the beginners for their existing fames and reputations. Hence, the beginners tend to try more while the experts tend to consider more things such as how would the public consider them if they fail.

However, experienced does not equal to conservative. There exist some experts who do not care anything else but their research. They are the experts of their fields who have comprehensive understanding of their ideas and theories, and they still have been working on it and constantly try new things and new ways to improve and broaden their research. Their experience and knowledge are their most valuable possesses for further research. For instance, in the last twenty years of Einstein, he constantly criticized his own theories and struggles to determine how to reconcile them with newer theories. Experts, who are authorities in his field, are most likely to make discoveries if only they are not limited by former authorities and themselves.

As mentioned above, the crucial point of making discoveries is not whether the person is a beginner or an expert, but the attitude towards the research. If the person can always be enthusiastic and active about his/her research and constantly make effort to work, more chances he/she has to make discoveries whether or not he/she is beginner. However, the lacking of relative knowledge and experiences is still big weakness of beginners, because the knowledge and experience are the foundation for further research and discoveries. Enthusiasm and creativity can help beginners have ideas and inspiration, but have nothing to do with further study which could turn the ideas into theories. Hence, the combination of comprehensive knowledge and experience and the enthusiasm is the point of making discoveries and improving theories.

To sum up, it is true that beginners are more likely to make breakthrough for their initiative and creativity. The experts who have the positive attitudes towards their research are also likely to succeed. The best way to make important discoveries is to combine the two advantages.
