Should all students be required to take courses in the sciences, even if they have no interest in science? In my point of view, every student should enrich himself with science knowledge and a sense of science which involves two aspects: methodology of science and courage and tenacity in pursuit of the truths about our world, our universe and ourselves. However, it is not appropriate to overemphasize the science courses without taking the students’ interests into account. Thus, our educators should search ways to stimulate the students’ interests in science.

The primary reason why we should emphasize courses in science is that it is science that help students appreciate our world, our universe, and about ourselves. Biology and chemistry provides us structure and function of organisms and thereby help students keep healthy. Thermodynamics facilitates the understanding of thermodynamic phenomena and processes such as rain, snow and fog. Quantum physics is beneficial to understand the principle and function about the technological innovations such as television sets, computer, air conditioner. It is true that social sciences such as politics, sociology, physiology, arts and history provides us perspectives of our culture and society―insight and perspective about history, one’s place in society, and cooperation with others. Yet, when it comes to scientific appreciation of our physical world, they are of little help.

Another reason why it is important for students to take science courses has to do with the purpose of education: to train students to be productive workers for society. Firstly, the sciences may be a stepping stone to other subjects and fields such as physiology, anthropology and public policy. Take anthropology for example, an anthropologist can excel in his field only by knowing some knowledge of chemistry and geology for performing some measurement tasks. The methodology of science is also beneficial to sociologist and anthropologist. For example, the way that scientists used to investigate the truth, experimental investment and theoretical assumption, is also valuable in social science. Secondly, students might be inspired by the courage and tenacity of history’s greater scientist to face down the fears, anxiety, and frustration when they travel through life. Most importantly, learning the anecdotes and story might inspire us to develop the same progress. For supporting example, one need look no further than de Broglie, who acquired Nobel Prize in 1929. De Broglie was a student of sociology in college. After he read many story about the prominent scientists such as Einstein, Plunk and Bohr, he decided to study the Quantum theory and eventually become a great scientist.

However, it is not appropriate to force students to attend courses in science irrespective of whether they are interested in it. After all, study rely on one own feelings. If students are compulsory to take science courses without interest would actually impede the learning process. However, a person, without the basis knowledge in science, would be deaf and blind in this era with radical technological and social development, most of which are incubated by science, and therefore the faculty and parents have the unshakeable responsibility to take to intrigue students’ interests in science.

In conclusion, the science knowledge is vitally important to enrich a student’s life. Courses also prepare students for future works. If students have little interests in science courses, such as physics, chemistry and biology, it is necessary to take various measures to intrigue students’ interest.
