There are, in the contemporary society, substantial nonmainstream areas of inquiry, such as astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits, whose value is under enthusiastic controversy. However, in my point of view, these nonmainstream areas have their own significance for their existence, if people are able to utilize them properly.

What is the threshold problem is that the nonmainstream areas can relieve one's sorrow, encourage people and give them hopes for the real life. When encountering great difficulties, people are inclined to feel depression and lose the nerve to go on their work, in this cases, if a surprising excellent prediction is offered, to some extent, they will refresh and stick to themselves; when facing a horrific disaster, some kinds of nonmainstream areas, such as the astrology, are also able to strengthen the minds of people, which will make them feel to be blessed and guaranteed by certain power and promote their faith to go on their lives; when confronting some puzzled phenomena, which cannot be interpreted by the contemporary knowledge, people often prefer to ascribe them to the function of psychic and paranormal pursuits that is possibly a kind of inspiration and impetus for the real science, such as the scientists' struggling to make clear the essence of the nature. In a word, the nonmainstream areas do play some crucial role in people's real life as well as the development of the science.

In addition, some of the nonmainstream areas are able to act as a kind of entertainment. It is common that there are plenty of forms of recreation relevant to the several kinds of nonmainstream areas. A most popular one is a sort of cards, which is used to predict the luck or disadvantages of the people in the future. This kind of cards is especially popular with the people who have a free life. With the card, they can kill the spare time more happily and also maintain a healthy life manner instead of gambling with those ordinary cards. In this way, the nonmainstream areas also have their merit for their existence in the contemporary society.

Admittedly, the nonmainstream areas also have their disadvantages in that they are likely to be utilized by the rulers as a tool to fool and rein the people. It is known to all that many emperors in the human history instilled their people with some kind of ideas to maintain their dominion, which has proven to rest on no scientific basis.
