51"Education will be truly effective only when it is specifically designed to meet the individual needs and interests of each student."
Today with increasing attention paid to education, what is the true meaning of education becomes a hot problem. Some people hold their opinion that education will be truly effective only when it is specifically designed to meet the individual needs and interests of each student. Although meeting the individual student's need is one of the aims of education, as far as I am concerned, education as a powerful to drive the development of society has far more purpose than that.

Firstly, some basic courses are must taken into consideration of the curriculum, although most students have no interests in them, which are established on tedious and recondite laws or formulations. Common sense tells us without the basic knowledge the students are hard to continue the further study. Just image that how could a student interested in computer, but with little knowledge of mathematics, understand a complex theory of software programs; and how could a student majoring in architecture while not acquiring any physical knowledge, design a skyscraper. Thus imposing some basic course on the students is necessary not only for their further study, but also benefits their future career.

Secondly, although education should aim to meet the students need, the major purpose of education is to serve the society, which provides the basic fund and environment of education. If the education just consider the students' interest while neglect the society's need, some important career but with little attention would be disappear, such as poets, philosophers and theorists-upon whose shoulder our society has developed before. Today, more and more students prefer choose the hot fields as their major, which both win them a good repute and provide them a good salary, while neglect some other subjects as talked above. Striking a balance in the job market, in order for a more smooth development in society, is the rough task of our education system, but must be necessary.

In addition, the education should aim at improvement both one's faculties and morals. The presidents of my university, Harbin Institute of Technology, once said(and I paraphrase) :" Our education system only help our students to build their fundamental architecture of life, and also impart them the skills of embellishing it, among which the most important and useful one is how to establish healthy codes of life philosophy.” Infusing some basic ideas disregarded some students, who think they have little use of their academic study, benefit not only students themselves in further career in society, but also prosperity of society-such as the essence of democracy, the healthy outlook of life, and the basic value of moral.

In sum, education should be designed to meet individual student’s needs and interests, however, some more important purposes of education are far beyond that. Infusing some basic knowledge, which provides the stable base for further study and future career, as well as some valuable ideas to prompt the development of society, would make our education system more effective to serve both society and individual.
