------正文------
Is it necessary for everyone to read poetry, novels, mythology and other types of imaginative literature? The speaker claims so and I agree with the speaker insofar as it is beneficial for people to read poetry, novels, mythology and other types of imaginative literature. However, it is unfair to claim that everyone should do so.
Admittedly, it is common for people to find a myriad of readings like poetry, novels, mythology and other types of imaginative literature in book stores. And more writers tend to write such kinds of readings in order to attract readers. What's more, in textbooks that are arranged for primary students or middle school students, there are lots of readings about these. Empirical experience seems to lend much credence to the fact that readings like poetry, novels, mythology and other types of imaginative literature serve a significant role in people's daily lives. Obviously, benefits of such readings can be perceived in the following ways.
Firstly, some widely-accepted values are rooted in these kinds of readings. This is especially true to the novels. Consider the famous writer Harriet Beecher Stowe and her remarkable novel "Uncle Tom's Cabin" for example. In her novel, she informed people how and why we should treat African Americans as the same as the whites. And her novels are widely regarded as a reading material for parents to read to their kid in United States. Undoubtedly, such a way of teaching can instill young children the right perspective towards racial equity, and in turn alleviate the potential racial problems in future.
Furthermore, readings like novels, poetry, mythology, can be used as a means to relax people themselves. It is common for us to read such materials to entertain ourselves, especially in such a fast-pace world. According to a three-year survey, conducted by a famous newspaper in China named "China Youth", it clearly reveals that approximately 72.5% of the white-collar workers choose to read novels or mythologies to alleviate the tremendous pressure from daily lives, and regard it as an useful means.
Moreover, under certain circumstances, it is the poetry, mythology and other types of imaginative literature that stimulate the inspiration for people. This is especially true when it comes to scientific fictions. As reported by the latest newspaper, a space ship is designed by a Japanese scientist, which coincidentally has many same characters that appeared in a scientific fiction ten years ago and aroused people's great interests. After talking to the designer, the newsman reported that according to the designer's words, in fact, the inspirations about the design of the space ship were truly derived from the descriptions in such a scientific fiction. What surprised people most was the inventor's saying that he was planning to devise another spacecraft similarly in accordance with the descriptions from another story. From the story, we can easily infer that imaginative literature can serve as a catalyst to promote people's imagination and creativity.
Despite the numerous benefits of reading poetry, novels, mythology and other types of imaginative literature, it is still unfair to make an undue assertion that it is necessary for everyone to read such materials. Firstly, people can freely choose various means to relax themselves, like sports, chatting with friends, tourist, and so forth. In turn there is no need for people to choose to read poetry, novels, mythology and other types of imaginative literature. Secondly, as students, they can still receive education on values from other means, like learning from others, pursuing social activities, and so forth. Thirdly, reading imaginative literature is certainly not the only way to stimulate people's inspiration, and people can develop their novel ideas from all aspects of life, like his friend, his working experience, and so forth.
What's worse, over-emphasis on reading poetry, novels, mythology and other types of imaginative literature can sometimes lead to harmful consequences. For example, as a political leader, he has to deal with tons of mundane affairs everyday, and reading such materials will definitely cost his extra time which can be used for him to have a rest. Is it still necessary for him to read such materials? Surely not.
To sum up, I concede that reading poetry, novels, mythology and other types of imaginative literature can carry beneficial consequences to people in such a modern world. However, whether it is necessary to read such materials should be based on personal interests and other pragmatic considerations. |
