In this era of social and technological advancement leading to great progress in our material world, practicality has been the perpetual subjects of ordinary people today. But is practicality our great idol that all our powers and talents should sever for? As far as I am concerned, I fundamentally agree with the assertion concerning the most spheres of our lives. However, a close scrutiny reveals that some areas, such as the scientific research, may not suit the case.

To begin with, individuals’ everyday life involves with practicality and pragmatism. In essence, human being is an animal as other creatures and the first and foremost things for them are food and clothing in order to survive in the society both as a social and natural animal. What's more, when the basic needs are satisfied and solved, they will pursue the higher goals of life, such as a comfortable and convenient apartment or good job opportunities in order to have good development in their career. All these things are material and force human beings to be more practical to realize their goals, which most of their lives are rotating around. When it comes to the business area, it is precisely the same as the individual life. Nowadays, almost of the real-estate developers, Hollywood film producers and vehicle manufacturers are concerned with the practicality and the maximum profit, not pay too attention to other respects, also in order to survive in this increasingly competitive society.  Thus, to some extent pragmatism serves as a driving power to promote the development of the society and better satisfy the human beings’ material needs.  /在生活领域和商业领域都是物质的,实际的,人们总是被物质所驱动满足需要.

In addition, a great many of inventions and productions are invented targeting the practical application and catering for people’s desire and needs in the long history of human civilization. For instance, when people once wished to fly freely like a bird and take place of walking, the Wright Brother invented the airplane for us; when people wished to listen to the voice of their own, then the preeminent American inventor Edison created the gramophone for us; When people wanted to talk with others on the other end the planet, then Alexander Bell gave birth to telephone; when people wanted to restore the images of their own, then the camera came into being. It is apparent that all these inventions are for practical using and their values only realized through practical usage. /许多发明创造都是以实用性为目标的,都是为了满足人们的现实需要.

Nevertheless, some scientific research, such as purely theoretical research, is not driven by the immediate practicality but rather towards the long-term objectives. Some theories are hard to be comprehended by common person and seem to be useless ostensibly, but their value will serve for more profound significance of applications. To illustrate this point, Einstein’s special theory of relativity can serve as a good example. When Einstein proposed his supreme special theory of relativity in the year of 1905, because of its complicated and abstract system, there were only few excellent scientists and researchers could comprehend his ideas and thoughts, not alone ordinary people. This theoretical research seemed to be impractical at that time and thereby soon was consigned to oblivion. However, the scientific history of mankind has witnessed its revolutionary change to our world, such as nuclear energy, the use of laser, superconductor and so forth, which had greatly benefited people’s life and consolidated the prosperity for society./科学领域的纯理论研究很重要，但不是立马就能显示出来的！

In conclusion, we should pay more attention the practical aspects of something involving our live, while should also not overlook something are not obviously valuable currently.  Both all of these things should be focused our powers and talents.
