The following appeared in a memo from the director of a large group of hospitals.
'In a laboratory study of liquid antibacterial hand soaps, a concentrated solution of Nadasept killed 40 percent more bacteria than the liquid hand soaps currently used in our hospitals. During a subsequent test of Nadasept at our hospital in Saluda, that hospital reported significantly fewer cases of patient infection than did any of the other hospitals in our group. Therefore, to prevent serious patient infections, we should supply Nadasept at all hand washing stations throughout our hospital system.'
------正文------In the argument, the arguer reaches the conclusion that Nadasept should be supplied at all hand washing stations throughout the hospital system. To justify the conclusion, the arguer points out the results from a laboratory study and a later test to show that Nadasept has a more obvious effect than the liquid hand soaps currently used. Careful examination of this series of reasoning, however, I find that the argument suffers from several logical flaws which make it unconvincing.

To begin with, the conclusion from the laboratory study that Nadasept can killed 40 percent more bacteria than the one used now is unwarranted since the environment of the experiment is so limited and not ordinary. For a reliable study, whose result is accurate, it must be representative of the overall population and suitable in various situations. In fact, we do not know whether the new liquid hand soap will be similarly effective in other places such as in real hospitals. It is entirely possible that there are many factors, for example, the temperature, which can undermine the effect. If so, the study is not reliable enough to make a conclusion.

Further, another report from a subsequent test might also be somehow problematic because the arguer provides no evidence that this hospital has the same circumstances as all others. Perhaps the equipment here are more expensive and better or perhaps the patients are not as serious as those in other hospital and therefore they will not be so easily to be infected. Lacking evidence that all the situations and healthy conditions of patients in these hospitals are essentially the same, the arguer cannot make me accept the conclusion.

Last but not least, the recommendation that Nadasept should be used in all hospitals represents such a feint that there is no other better liquid hand soaps in the market. Even if we concede that Nadasept is more efficient to kill bacteria than the one used now, it is possible that Nadasept is not the best and there might be another one which can kill more bacteria and even be cheaper. Unless the arguer considers and eliminates this situation, the conclusion is groundless.

In sum, the argument lacks credibility because the evidence cited lends little support to what the arguer claims. To strengthen the conclusion, the arguer must provide sufficient information that Nadasept is the best liquid hand soaps and the study's result is reliable enough.
