-----issue39-----

"The intellectual benefits of attending a university or college are vastly overrated: most people could learn more by studying and reading on their own for four years than by pursuing a university or college degree."

40 minutes

Generally speaking, a man without education, especially higher-level education, is an unfortunate victim deprived of one of the greatest opportunities of the 21th century. In a large sense, the importance of attending a university or college can never be exaggerated or overrated. Although a vast number of people hold totally different opinion that an individual would acquire more knowledge without attending formal discipline of universities, I, as opposed to this standpoint, would like to present evidence to support the function of universities of colleges.
The last century, in which scientific and technological changes have progressed exponentially, has witnessed the importance of higher education. Streamlines, symbols of industrialization, could only be programmed or manipulated by staffs with skilled workers, which does not necessarily equate to traditional ones. In another word, they must master fundamentals of a certain technique which can only attained through 3-4 years' formal training. A recent survey conducted by authorative agent indicates that in GM alone, 80% or more employees own at least bachelor's degree. Because of complexity of technology, it becomes more and more difficult to overcome former simple technical problems only through discussion with counterparts, instead, well-devised training projects, aiming at enhancing ability of workers from virtually all aspects, are in great need correspondingly.
Certainly, university or college benefits us not only in practical aspects, but also in spiritual ones. Though it might seem very likely that a graduate will do nothing but niggling items at first, his or hers spiritual outlook would turn out to be utterly different from those without high-level education. For example, in any university dedicated to pluralism and universality, both arts and sciences constitute the most significant ingredients for the integrity of an individual. A student majored in physicist would be entitled the right to appreciate valuable or essential knowledge of music, which contribute greatly to the student's final success. Vice versa, professional painting students could savor each segment of beauty brought by physics if provided appropriately. Besides, mutual discussions with counterparts, such as fruitful seminars and workshops launched by various societies, and academic debates altogether forge a full man.
The importance of attending university is not limited to what discussed above. Universities are determined to be wells of wisdom, and consequently, bring the society with meritocracy and intellectuals, those immortal figures long remembered by posterities. Through history of university, university has served us as incubators or greenhouses for genius.Isac Newton, founder of modern physicist, attributed his achievement to nurture of University of Cambridge because his basic talent in science was developed under free academic atmosphere of this prominent university. What deserves a mention here is that university also provides every qualified students the ability to synthesis and relate, weigh cause and effect, and see things in historical perspectives. Mr. Tony Blair, current Premiere of UK, had remarked (I here paraphrase) that it was in Oxford, his alma mater, that he was trained to be superior.
Finally, it is undeniable that knowledge from other channels, such as experience, self-teaching, and practical account is extremely useful and valuable. However, it importance, to a large sense, cannot surpass that of attending university.
To conclude, intellectual and spiritual pursuit requires deep reflection about whether the importance of being enrolled in a university or a college and spending four years' time to study is overrated. Nonetheless, from what has been discussed above, we can safely arrive at the conclusion that higher education is worthwhile under any circumstance.

In another word, they must master fundamentals of a certain technique which can only attained through 3-4 years' formal training.does 3-4 years formal training equal to higher education? Or it is the intellectual benefit from college? A recent survey conducted by authorative agent indicates that in GM alone, 80% or more employees own at least bachelor's degree. Because of complexity of technology, it becomes more and more difficult to overcome former simple technical problems only through discussion with counterparts, instead, well-devised training projects, aiming at enhancing ability of workers from virtually all aspects, are in great need correspondingly.
