Issue159 好象有不少战友在写这篇啊!
"The human mind will always be superior to machines because machines are only tools of human minds."
We are living in an era in which everyday there are new scientific discoveries and technological innovation taking place. Even from the birth of the third technology revolution, machines have been playing a more and more important role in our daily livings. Engines, TV sets, ATMs, computers and so on, without which we can hardly imagine what our lives would become, as they have impact on almost every aspects of our lives. Some people are worried about that someday the machines will be superior to human beings, but others claim the opposite. In my opinion, this question should be answered according to different situations.
There is no doubt that machines are invented to serve the purpose of being tools of human minds. This can be shown most clearly as we consider the computer. When first invented in the wartime during the 1940's, it invention was aiming at help people to calculate parameters about firing a bomb. When under the proper guidance from the scientists who were working on that machine, it can help figuring out more accurate parameters and as a result, much higher rate of the success in launching a bomb. Other machines, for example the small calculator, was invented to help people calculating the arithmetic problems more accurately and conveniently. Without such tools, we may still living in an ear in which manual work is predominant.
However, the fact that machines are tools of human minds cannot be exclusively used as the reason that human mind will always be superior to them. In fact, the term "superior to" should be carefully defined. Whether it focus on the amount of work those machines can be done during a given period of time and they can complete them more quickly and accurately, or it pays attention to the creativity or originality to give a possible solution when facing some kinds of problems? Without taking this into account, the question that which is superior to the other, human minds or machines, cannot be answered effectively. In fact, the two aspects are just the key questions when we are trying to define the superiority between human minds and machines.
When it comes to the focus on the ability to complete more work in a given amount of time more conveniently and accurately, it is clear that machines are superior to the human minds. When it costs several minutes for the human minds to work out the result of a polynomial, the computer can make tens of thousands time of calculation in just one second as therefore give out the result almost immediately. When we want to predict the possible pattern of the climate in about a few of coming days, without the calculation of those super computers on many relevant factors, such as geographical differences, amount of greenhouse gases that are emitted, former records on weather changes, and even the impact from the activity of the internal of the Sun. No simple human can work out this task, even if he succeeded, the intended weather forecast would probably ironically be obsolete. In a word, in the sense of the kind of work and the promptness such work is done, the machines shows the absolute superiority to the human minds.
However, if we concentrate our attention on handle potential problems creatively or originally, this time the human minds is no doubt the final winner. The machines are mechanically doing the jobs that the human minds tells them to do all the time. They do not possess the ability to think independently at the current time, under the current development of science and technology. Someone may infer the famous chess competition between the super computer "Deep Blue" made by IBM and the most competent chess play in the world as an example to contradict the view. However, what this example reveals is just the opposite. When playing chess, the super computer do not make the decision which step to take the next time upon its own thinking, it just take the possible steps proposed by chess fans all over the world through the Internet into its calculation to figure out which one would be the best one with the highest possibility. It does nothing more than collecting information and doing calculation upon them. At the same time, the world-class chess player makes the decision solely on his mind, tackling different consequences or problems he might encounter. In this sense, the human minds is superior to the machines.
As the science and technology developing at a ever increasing rapid speed, we are trying to make the machines more and more like a human being. Artificial Intelligence, is the field that focus on its whole attention to make machines to have their own thought. While now there is a clear division when we consider the question of who is superior, it is possible that in the future the machines may develop their ability to think independently equal to the human minds, just as some scientific fictions issue: when irrelevant pieces of programs meet together, valid new one could possibly occur, and that is the thought of the machines.
