The speaker claims that practicality is now our great idol, which all powers and talents must serve, thus anything that is not obviously practical has little value in today's world. Although this view is somewhat reasonable because we live in an earthly world, in my opinion, I don't quite agree with it because it is too extreme.
In the following analysis, I would like to provide evidence to substantiate my standpoint.
Admittedly, it is no doubt that we live in a real word and practically determines our live greatly. As a matter of fact, most scientists and celebrities pursue their work on this basic premise. For example, we need look no further than the famous scientist Edison, who has created thousands of inventions in his life, bring us a convenient and efficient world. Most of his inventions are practical, and we can not live without them nowadays. Meanwhile, the importance of practicality is incarnated in almost every area of our live. Thus it is reasonable to say that practicality is of great value.
However, it is rash to conclude that anything that is not obviously practical has little value in today's world. For instance, it is unwise to overlook the significance of those psychologists’ work. They study our mental word and help us to construct correct system of values and philosophy of life. Furthermore, from their analysis, we learn how to shape a proper attitude while we are confronted with embarrassment in our life. Thus should we consider this kind of work has little value in the modern world just because it is not obviously practical? Of course not. Another example, we can think about some basic theories such as the Einstein’s famous theory of relativity, it reflects the basic law of movement of nature, and it plays a vital role in helping us to realize the nature rationally.
In addition, let us consider the topic about dream and ideal, it seems that both of them are not practical on the surface, but everybody knows that it will be a terrible world when all of people lost their ideals. Only if people have dreams and toward their goals insistently can they achieve the final success thus make a steady and smooth progress of our society. Without dreams and ideals, what the world will be? There is no hope, no competition, no pressure, and no advance. Without hope, it is impossible for Edison to have thousands of experiments to find that tungsten filament is the best material for electric bulb. Without ideals, Fleming could not find penicillin. Without dreams, it is nonsensical to talk about the practicality.
To sum up, from the above mention, we may comfortable to conclude that practicality has great value not only for our daily life, but for the development of whole world also. However, it is untenable to say that anything that is not obviously practical has little value in current world. Because some of them have been playing a vital role in our everyday live and have great value exactly. Therefore, the value of something should not be evaluated on its practicality only, but its benefits to the further development of our society. |
