I concede that such nonmainstream areas of inquiry as astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits satisfy human basic needs to some extent. However, in my point of view, if we put too much emphasis on these areas, it may mislead our life and society, the potential harm outweighs the psychological benefits. The vital role play in society is still mainstream science.

Admittedly, the above-mentioned nonmainstream areas sometimes contribute to people’s psychological solace and preconception, by virtue of there still exist some enigma that mainstream science could not illustrate or shed light on, and life is full of uncertainties, insecurities and confusion in the contemporary world. People who frustrated and depressed after suffering tremendous setbacks or catastrophes, are more likely to rely on fortune-telling and astrology, by doing that they intend to find the underlying reason of their unlucky fortune and pursuit psychological comfort. For instance, when people in ancient china suffered natural disaster and scared by other natural phenomenon that people can not explain at that time, their turn to so-called celestial being and immortal. Currently, it would mostly happen in patients and business. One the other hand, people who suffered from death of relatives and friends and encounter other unknowns such as UFO and invisible snow giant, are more likely to rely on psychic and paranormal pursuits. They tend to pursuit a psychological solace and think with fantastic conception when the mainstream science does little help. In short, sometimes these nonmainstream areas of inquiry have positive effects.

However, some positive effects of nonmainstream areas do not mean that they are so significance to human being and society; they could not dominate our lives in the long run. If we rely on them excessively, it would do harm to our human being and society. Because these pursuits are not rooted in reason and logic, and also have no scientific basis. Some of those who work as fortunetelling and astrology are charlatans, they grasp the nature specious, unease and vulnerable of people as to control, manipulate and demagogue of the spirit of multitude and society, and to make fortune. What they have done is potential harm to society. It is also the fact that people are pursuit psychic and paranormal pursuits excessively are resulted in mental disease even suicide. How terrible. Although we faced with infinite choices, we experience uncertainty, insecurity and confusion. We should try to find scientific way to solve. Therefore we must cast away the harmfulness that nonmainstream areas do.

The last key point I want to put forward is that it is the mainstream science that contribute more to us, and they significance become obvious day by day. Fortunately with the rapid development of psychology and medical science, more and more psycho and traumatic patients turn to psychologist and doctors. Scientific analysis of Economics helps business men invest more reasonable, rather than turn to fortuneteller to know the proper position and time . The accuracy of astronomy activates the confidence of development and power of human being. In short, it is the mainstream science that plays the vital role in society.

To sum up, since the negative effects in aforementioned nonmaintream areas of inquiry outweigh the positive one, and as the increasing development of mainstream science, thus the vital role is mainstream science, and we pay much more attention to the scientific pursuits.
