144. "It is the artist, not the critic,* who gives society something of lasting value."
*a person who evaluates works of art, such as novels, films, music, paintings, etc.

Art, one of the key issues of human being's achievements, reveals a panorama of human spiritual world. In this world of profound treasure, both the artist, the one who professes and practices imaginative works of art, and the critic, the one who interprets and evaluates works produced by artists, contribute to giving society something of lasting value.

In the course of human civilizations through thousands of years, we are invariably moved and nourished by watching, by listening, or by reading works of eminent artists.

It is artists who view the world from a unique perspective, dig eternal beauties generally hidden in nature and individuals, thus enable us to rediscover the ordinary world as we previously thought and provoke our sensuous pleasure. No matter how many years have passed, we are still impressed by the peaceful scene in the countryside painted by Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot, and are still deeply touched by the devotion of love described by O.Henry in his famous novel "The Present Of The Magi".

It is artists who forever give us spiritual comfort and inspire our sympathy by deeply understanding human emotions and complexities or suffering of life, because we, as long as human beings, taste similar love, sadness, regret and all the complex feelings aroused from life. When listening to the harmonious tunes composed by Chopin we are soothed and realize that we are not alone. When watching the films directed by F.Truffaut, we are sensitive about the fleeting time and transient youth. When faced with disastrous adversity of life, we are encouraged by the words of Tempest, the play written by Shakespeare, in the same way Beethoven was encouraged after his deaf.

Apart from emotionally striking us, artists also insightfully observe and rationally ponder over society and human nature. And then they reveal the absurdity in society and the dark underside of humanity in all kinds of forms of art. We are shocked at the first sight and then think it over for ourselves. Thousands of years later, we are still individuals and communities weak in all aspects criticized by earlier artists. We should blush when criticizing the prejudice in King Lear or suspicion in OthelloO in Shakespeare’s greatest plays. We should sigh when seeing the testimony of war in Pable Picasso's Guernica.

Not only does the content of art impress us, but also the artistic forms which are elegant in style and rich in sentiment arouse our aesthetic feelings. We can still understand the language of art used in our preceded centuries, such as the passionate tones of Van Gogh or humorous wit of Bernard Shaw.

Were there not artists, people's spiritual world would have been a totally deserted land. Because of the lasting values lie in artistic works, we share the consistent human culture. While at the same time critics also creat perpetual values in the field of writing and aesthetics.

Critics dig the eternal beauty which lies in the works of art and clearly show why and how so that we can not only taste beauty itself but the way it is generated. It is true that everyone of us can have our own point of views about those works, but critics offer many new ways and perspectives universally applied when we do the appreciating process beyond some specific work. In this way some critics develop certain evaluating theory system on the aesthetic ground which guide us find more pleasure and new enlightenment all the time. For example, the book "The Mirror and The Lamp: Romantic Theory and The Critical Tradition" written by the famous American critic M.H.Abrams is still wildly read and republished nowadays. The way he presented on how to analyze fictions by the interaction of four elements -- the writer, the world, the work and the reader is still well applied to literature study.

Also, the only way critics convey their ideas and capture attention is writing, and there are always times when the criticism itself becomes excellent work of art.  We are fascinated by the insightful observation and witful or elegant language showed in the paragraph. I still remember when reading Virginia Wolf's critical writing against Jane Eyre and Wuthering Height, I was totally attracted by her passionate words and read it again and again. That's how critics give us something of lasting value,  thought and artistry,  in literature.

Without Critics, we may lost lots of pleasure when appreciating art works. Both of artists and critics show us aesthetic elements invariably lie in nature and human. However, in the ocean of their works, most of them have deeply sinked to the bottom or washed away as time goes by, only those with insightful content and skilled techniques can still cause waves in modern world, some of which are works of art, some are writings of criticism. After all, true values lie in nowhere but excellent works regardless of the roles of individuals who create them, that is to say, no matter they are artists or critics.

144. "It is the artist, not the critic,* who gives society something of lasting value."
*a person who evaluates works of art, such as novels, films, music, paintings, etc.

Art, one of the key issues of human being's achievements, reveals a panorama 【这个词用的不错】of human spiritual world.

It is artists who view the world from a unique perspective, dig eternal beauties generally 【这个词不够准确】hidden in nature and individuals, thus enable us to rediscover the ordinary world as we previously thought 【the world as ordinary as we once thought】and provoke our sensuous pleasure. No matter how many years have passed, 【这句用的有点太简单了】we are still impressed by the peaceful scene in the countryside painted by Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot, and are still deeply touched by the devotion of love described by O.Henry in his famous novel "The Present Of The Magi".

Critics dig the eternal beauty 【跟艺术家完全一样的表达,换一个】which lies in the works of art and clearly show why and how so that we can not only taste beauty itself but the way it is generated. It is true that everyone of us can have our own point of views about those works, but critics offer many new 【这里用professional之类的比较好,不是说他新是说他专业权威】ways and perspectives universally applied when we do the appreciating process beyond some specific work.
