The speaker claims that any work of art must be understandable to the public in order to have merit. However, I disagree with the speaker's assertion and from my point of view, any work's merit are ultimately not evaluated by the mass and art has its own criteria of merit.
   
     In the first place, most artworks are the reflection of artists' subject thinking and creative idea about the world which can not easily appreciated by the mass. As we know, the creation of art is a subjective course accompanying with the artists' intensive passion, affection and emotion while most people do not have so deep feeling towards the same works and thus they can not deeply comprehend the thinking of artworks. "The real great work of art," once remarked Van Gogh (with a little abridgement) "is not only the reflection of the objective world, but also the reflection of creator's subjective and specific thinking." In fact, Van Gogh's paintings perfectly represent his saying, such as Sunflowers, Starrynight and so forth which completely express the painter's profound passion and compression on the natural world. However, these great paintings can not be apprehended by Van Gogh's contemporary society. But this situation can not mask the outstanding merit of these masterpieces. Accordingly, most artists have their specific attitudes towards the world and they have their special fashions to express their talent and gift on their outstanding artworks which can not be appreciated by the mass.
   
    In addition, most great works require professional knowledge about the arts to be deeply comprehended. In most situations, ordinary people may not be cultivated by the artistic atmosphere and hence have no sufficient knowledge about the art, which leads them to neglecting the merit of the arts. For instance, from 1930s to 1960s, surrealism art has its specific merit in the domain of art, which includes painting, sculpture, film and so forth. Surrealism art utilizes the professional technology such as frottage, collage and automatism to manifest its idea. Consequently, if one intends to profoundly appreciate the value of works in the field of surrealism art, it is indispensable for him or her to study the special technology regarding this domain. On the contrary, without comprehending the specific technology, one can not really analyze the techniques of the artworks and can not deeply understand the meaning of the works.

Admittedly, there are still great valuable works which can be appreciated by the mass or contemporary society. For example, in music, Mozart and his music was very popular with the public. In literature, Mark Twain's novels have many readers and have great sales. However, the genuine success of works results form the meaningful and profound self-expression and the real criteria determining the value of artworks is artworks’ own thinking and ideas. No matter whether the great thinking and the idea can be understandable by the public or not, the value of works should be evaluated independently.
   

     To sum up, it is likely that people overemphasize the evaluation of the public towards the works of art. Nevertheless, judging from what has been discussed above, we should to a large extent realize that the works in art are evaluated by the works' self-expression other than the public.

to Alier ，本来这篇文章得结构是想写成：
1。艺术作品主要是艺术家主观世界得反映，并不能被大多数人认同
2。很多艺术作品需要专业的知识才能理解，而大众往往不具有这样的专业知识
3。说明评价艺术作品的标准是艺术作品本身的表现，而不是大众的理解
