Are the merits of arts is absent without populace’s understanding? From the analysis on the values of social, aesthetic and “marketing”, I get a conclusion the other way around.

Above all , art significance lie in its influences on social levels. Since they reveal the concepts hidden under the mundane life and the impulse that may cause a revolution, it is impractical to make most people to understand the ideas behind the article, the canvas, and the play. For example, the post-modernism in art field in 1950's really confused public viewers at its presumptuous emergence. At that time, artists can not bear the mass conformity and coldness of machines in industrial culture. They stood up first to claim human’s emancipation from the controls of machines, from the restraints of mass production, from the disinterest of human's creativity. They exploited their pigments and pens to express their ideas, but ordinary people can not understand why they put so many strange colours onto the face of the portrait on the canvas randomly, why they composed so noisy music to bother others. The deep thinking of reality and strong will to express creatively determined its "high position" and “eccentric meaning” beyond common sense. But their post-modernism works do contain merits for their waking up the society, for their efforts to stop the slavery by cold machines on people's mind.  Afterwards, the society takes changes gradually in many fields, such as new life styles of individual pursuit, freedom demands and so on. It is the profundity and creativity of arts that deeply and implicitly influenced society to change people's minds, their value systems although people can not understand or even perceive it, they can be affected by the idea.

In addition, the aesthetic value may just give people a feeling of beauty. It is not necessary to make people understand why the "Starry night" by Van Gogh is regarded as masterpiece. In fact, it has already make effect that common people have seen the picture and felt pleasant, whether the scale should be like this, or the colour contrast should be stronger or weaker can totally left to artists. Confusing about the ways or the skills through which artists express will not bother people's emotional influences on aesthetic values.

Furthermore, sometimes it may do harm for the pursuit to cater public's taste or lower artist's position to obtain public comprehension for material merits realization. In order to acquire market revenue, some directors produce junk films containing indecent scenes of sex or violence to meet people's needs. Some novelist just writes about "instant literature" serving as fast food with no nutrition. It is true that they can be understood by people since it follows human's needs and inferior interests basing from their intrinsic deficiencies, but the arts betray its principle, let along serve merits.

In sum, as the famous saying goes, " It is real arts that guide populace rather than follow them passively." For real values, no matter how few people understand, they will still exist in the masterpieces.
