Writing:
Task One:
The trend in employment in the US
Task Two:
University has put the training needed in workplace in its education. But many people argue university should teach for its own sake. What’s your opinion on this issue.
Spoken:
Part One
Where are you from?
I was born in Shanghai, but now I’m studying in Beijing.
Where do you live now?
Now I live in Beijing, on campus sharing a dormitory with three other girls.
What is the part of the city that you like?
The city has a very good academic atmosphere. It has a long history, that’s the most fascinating part.
What is the part of the city that you don’t like?
It’s too crowded, maybe. And the air pollution is getting more and more serious.
Are you going to stay here any longer?
I’m not sure, I guess it all depends on my choice after graduation.
Film
Do you like films?
Yes, quite. I’m a huge fan.
What kind of film do you like?
Usually comedy, I guess. Especially when I am under great pressure.
How often do you watch films?
Two to three times a week.
Do you like to watch alone or with your friends?
Huh.. you know I like to hang out with friends. But regarding films, I’d prefer to watch it by myself. Because sometimes I identified with characters so much that I couldn’t stop crying or laughing…That really makes me look crazy.
Do you prefer to watch film in the cinema or at home?
Both have advantages, you always get better sound effect and view in cinema, but watch film at home is much cheaper. I usually watch films over my laptop in dormitory.
Birthday:
How important is birthday in your country?
It’s quite important, I think. Birthdays are like milestones in one’s life, and are quite meaningful.
What do children get on birthday in your country?
Presents, most commonly. And they’ve got to have some noodles like children in the west would have cakes. That expresses good wishes from the family.
What is the most important birthday celebrated in China?
It’s the 88th birthday. In Chinese it’s called “Mi Shou” In ancient China scarcely anyone could live up to that age of life. So, if a family has a member aged 88, that will be a real jubilee that worth celebrating.
Part Two
What kind of book would you like to write (eg. Textbook, history book, story book etc.)
You should say
What kind of book you would like to write?
What would you write in your book?
What kind of people would read your book in your opinion?
The book that I’d like to write is something like autobiography. It’s interesting to put down the things one has experienced and the places he has visited. That is something unique and distinguishes one from another. I would write about my life, about the heart attack I got when I was a child, about the growing pains I suffered, the love I gave and received. I would write about my friends, my family the cities I’ve been to. Because it is exactly these events that formed my character and made my life full of stories. It feels good to share with others you story or your experiences. My book is meant mostly for family I’d reckon. For the younger ones to read about their sister, their aunt, their mother even their grandma to know her story, her laughter and sorrows. That’s gotta be fun and of course meaningful doing this, I mean writing the book. I don’t want to write anything boring that one has to cram for before exams.
Follow up
When would you plan to write it?
I’ve actually started writing diary and I got some articles published in some journals.
Do you like writing?
Yes, very much. As for me it’s a good way to relax and looking back to the past.
Part Three:
Writer
What is the most important quality about a writer?
It all depends on the nature of the books he wants to write. For instance he has to be faithful to the facts and objective if he wants to write a textbook or history book. You’ve got be serious about writing that kind of stuff. As for fiction writers, they should be imaginative.
Why do people choose to write for a living?
I guess early last century writing was the only possible means of making a living for women. Nowadays many choose to write out of their personal interest what’s more they can get paid for their interest. Isn’t it good?
What kind of difficulty would a writer come up with?
Instability, financially, I guess, especially for free-lance writers. The lack of inspiration is also terrible, writers usually come up with bottlenecks when they want to write something.
Library
What do you think of library in your society?
It’s quite important nowadays though I admit in the past when knowledge was not fully desired, many library was torn down and many books burnt to ash. In this new era, such thing won’t happen again. What’s more, library is not only a place of serious learning but also a great place to have fun and entertain oneself.
How can library encourage people to read/learn more?
In many ways, but the most significant one is it is in the libraries that one can have free access to new books of vast varieties. Books are by no means inexpensive these days, and you don’t know which are the ones you want to buy and keep them for second reading. While for other books you just want to scan through some pages and put them back to the shelves.
What do you think of the government spending amount of money on library for the general public?
I totally agree that government has many other issues concerned while the budget is usually limited. But spending on the library is always a wise choice, cause it never does harm to nation if its government encourages its people to learn more. |
