ISSUE 87 【已批改】
87 "In any field of inquiry, the beginner is more likely than the expert to make important discoveries."
The speaker asserts that the beginner will have more opportunity than expert to make important discoveries in any field of inquiry. In my view, what important is not whether he is a beginner or expert, it is crucial what qualities he has. Some qualities, such as critical thinking, active mind, deep insight, careful observation, abundant knowledge are always need. Without these qualities, no matter he is a beginner or expert, he can not have any discoveries.
Scepticism may be the most important quality for discovery. Only when some one dare to challenge what he had been taught, can he pave the way for scientific progress. For example, Copernicus, without passive acceptance of the notion that the earth was in a fixed position at the center of the universe, advanced the new theory that the earth and other planets revolve around the sun, disrupting the Ptolemaic system of astronomy, which paved the way for Galileo and Newton’s principles later. The achievement of Copernicus is proof enough of the value of skepticism.
Scepticism is not the only one quality for making great discoveries, other qualities are also important, such as active mind, deep insight, careful observation, abundant knowledge and so on. Without deep insight and careful observation, we can not find the discoveries even it is in front of us; without active mind, we can not design the experiment to testify the discovery; Without abundant knowledge, we can not explain what we have seen and what we have done.
Admittedly, some beginner is more likely than the expert to make important discoveries. However, when we look back to these beginners, in fact, they all have qualities we mentioned above at the same time. Some famous scientists, for example, Faraday, Galileo and Einstein are such beginners when they found their new theory. So it is not beginner but quality that determine the important discovery.
In sum, for what has been discussed above, we may finally draw the conclusion that without the necessary qualities, one can not do great discovery no matter he is a beginner or expert.

Without deep insight and careful observation, we can not find the discoveries even it is in front of us; without active mind, we can not design the experiment to testify the discovery; Without abundant knowledge, we can not explain what we have seen and what we have done. [对于这些方面的要求,在说理、举例方面都还有待加强。]

[和前面两段一样的问题。]
In sum, for what has been discussed above, we may finally draw the conclusion that without the necessary qualities, one cannot do great discovery no matter he is a beginner or expert. [结尾显粗略。]
本文的观点提出得很好,但是对于其论述却还有待加强。
