In US, Nurses (RN) are hourly employee. They were paid by hours not salary.
They make good money.
Here is an example of my friend:
In 1995, she finished the nursing school from the local community college and
passed the RN test. Now, she works in ICU of a san diego hospital in the
weekend program. In the program, she has to work 2 weekends each week and she
will get extra 4 bonus hours every weekend. If work extra shift, there is
$10/hours bonus. Her hourly rate is $32.
Let us find how much she is making:
working day 1 (weekend1): 12 hours X $32 + 12 hours X $4 (night shift) +
4hours(weekend bonus) X $32 = $560
working day 2 (weekend 2): 12 hours X $32 + 12 hours X $4 (night shift) +
4hours(weekend bonus) X $32 = $560
If she works extra shifts:
working day 3(weekend 3): 12 hours X $32 + 12 hours X $4 (night shift) +
4hours(weekend bonus) X $32 + 12 hours (extra shift bonus) X $10 = $680
working day 4(weekday 1): 12 hours X $32 + 12 hours X $4 (night shift) +
8hours(overtime, more than 40 hours pre week) X $32X0.5 + 12 hours (extra
shift bonus) X $10 = $680
working day 5(weekday 2): 12 hours X $32 + 12 hours X $4 (night shift) +
12hours(overtime, more than 40 hours pre week) X $32X0.5 + 12 hours (extra
shift bonus) X $10 = $744
working day 6(weekday 3): 12 hours X $32 + 12 hours X $4 (night shift) +
12hours(overtime, more than 40 hours pre week) X $32X0.5 + 12 hours (extra
shift bonus) X $10 = $744
working day 6(weekday 4): 12 hours X $32 + 12 hours X $4 (night shift) +
12hours(overtime, more than 40 hours pre week) X $32X0.5 + 12 hours (extra
shift bonus) X $10 = $744
Each month, The hospital will pay for department meetings and trainning
session time. If she work at same day, it is doulbe pay.
At holiday season, there are so many double or triple pay shift. It is
possible to make about 5k a week.
There are a lot of RNs in ICU make more than $100K.
