"There are two types of laws: just and unjust. Every individual in a society has a responsibility to obey just laws and, even more importantly, to disobey and resist unjust laws."
When it comes to the laws, such questions arise: Are all the laws just? What should we do toward those unjust laws? The debate on the just and unjust laws is a hot issue. As far as I concerned, obeying the just laws is not only our responsibilities but the basis of preserving a society's prosperity and stability. However, when confronting with the unjust laws, disobeying and resisting them cannot ultimately change the laws themselves, we should resort to other efficacious means to change the situation.
To begin with, laws, body of official rules and regulations, generally found in constitutions, legislation, judicial opinions, and the like, that is used to govern a society and to control the behavior of its members. As the citizens, we cannot deny that obeying the just laws are the responsibilities of ourselves. Just imaging that, if individuals can do anything without the restrictions of the laws, what our society will be? Therefore, the society's stability and prosperity need every member to maintain.
However, as the speaker asserts, the laws can be classified into two kinds: just and unjust laws. Common sense tells us that disobeying the laws is a kind of behavior not be advocated, even can be regarded as convicting crime. However, disobeying the laws sometimes is sort of virtue. Consider, for example, in the Second World War, it is the German law that Jews should be all deracinated. Millions of inculpable Jews are cruelly slaughtered. Some virtuous Germen run the risk of losing lives to hide those Jews. Though disobeying the laws, still these affecting behaviors reflect the quality of being benevolent and vindicating the justice of human beings'.
Finally, does everyone really consider whether disobeying and resisting the unjust laws are the best means? Do we fundamentally remodel the unjust laws? As an illustration, there is a clause that the slavery is protected by Constitution since United States was founded. During a long period, slaveries had been pressured and exploited by slaveholders. Until the establishment of famous " the 14th Amendment to the Constitution of United States" by Lincoln, slaveries' rights eventually could be guaranteed. This case undoubtedly builds up a good example for the follow ones, that is, resorting to other means to change the unjust laws, through legislation, election or mass media. After all, a few individuals' power is limited, disobeying and resisting the unjust laws cannot transform the laws' essence. Furthermore, it is possible that citizens make some unnecessary sacrifices for it. Thus, the mass's power is imponderable and we should make good use of it.
To recapitulate my point, a society's stability and prosperity are preserved by every social member's self-conscious law-abiding sense. Nevertheless, when confronting with those unjust laws, we should get together to vigorously root out of them through the legislation, election and mass media. |
