The following appeared in a local newspaper.
'People should not be misled by the advertising competition between Coldex and Cold-Away, both popular over-the-counter cold medications that anyone can purchase without a doctor's prescription. Each brand is accusing the other of causing some well-known, unwanted side effect: Coldex is known to contribute to existing high blood pressure and Cold-Away is known to cause drowsiness. But the choice should be clear for most health-conscious people: Cold-Away has been on the market for much longer and is used by more hospitals than is Coldex. Clearly, Cold-Away is more effective.'

The speaker claims in the newspaper that Cold-Away instead of Coldex, a kind of over- the-counter cold medication is more effective. To support his claim, the speaker have listed some seemingly sound reasons that may serve to what he says. While a first glance at it may seems that what the speaker says is reasonable, however, close scrutiny of it may reveals some questionalbe assumptions the speaker relies on to make his claim that render it unconvincing as it stands.

A threshold problem with the speaker's claim involves his hasty conclusion that people have been misled by the advertising competition between Coldex and Cold-Away. However, without referring to any credible evidences to show that people have been misled by the advertising competition, the speaker's conclusion that people have been misled and his strong implication that people have been misled to show more interest in Coldex instead of Cold-Away is totally ungrounded. According to my own experience, nowadays, advertisement have been so exaggarating that nearly no people will make their choice according to a mere piece of advertisement, especially when their physical health is concerned.

In addition, when listing the side effect of these two medications, the speaker unreasonably implicates that Cold-Away is better than Coldex as far as their side effects are concerned. I should concede that drowsiness is by no means a worse side effect than high blood pressure. However, it is not to say that to all people Cold-Away is better than Coldex. It may be strongly suggested by their family physician to take Coldex instead of Cold-Away for those who work in conditions that drowiness will be a much more deadly killer than high blood pressure, like taxi drivers, construction workers. In these cases, even a short period of snapping will cause severe accidents. So it is totally unwarranted for the speaker to make the strong implication.

A final analysis of what the speaker claims will reveal his dubious logic in basing on that mere facts that Cold-Away has been on the market for much longer and is used by more hospitals than is Coldex to conclude that Cold-Away is more effective. A long existence and the wide prevelance to some extent do represent the effectiveness of Cold-Away, however, the fact is that they do not necessarily equal to the conclusion all the times. It is possible and in most cases nearer to the true facts that Coldex is a new-designed medication and still in its way to booming. Commonsense tells me that a new medication in most cases is more effective while will spend some time to occupy or even monoply the market in the end. So it is the speaker's dubious logic that makes him conlude in such a hurry without adding other more convincing evidences.

So the what the speaker claims to a great extent is unreasonable. To better bolster it, he must offer us some more credible evidences to show that Cold-Away is better than Coldex with regard to their side effect and effectiveness.
