Argument 140
The following appeared in a report of the Committee on Faculty Promotions and Salaries at Elm City University.
'During her seventeen years as a professor of botany, Professor Thomas has proved herself to be well worth her annual salary of $50,000. Her classes are among the largest at the university, demonstrating her popularity among students. Moreover, the money she has brought to the university in research grants has exceeded her salary in each of the last two years. Therefore, in consideration of Professor Thomas' demonstrated teaching and research abilities, we recommend that she receive a $10,000 raise and a promotion to Department Chairperson; without such a raise and promotion, we fear that Professor Thomas will leave Elm City University for another college.'

The evidences given in the argument should be examined from several other angles before given Professor Thomas a raise and promotion. The argument is not cogent because the arguer seems to assume that Professor Thomas' demonstration was good enough to receive a raise and promotion or other wise she might leave without examining other factors that may affect the conclusion.

First, just because her classes are among the largest at the university does not mean that she is popular with students. An alternative explanation is that the student major in botany is much more than student major in other field, or students in other major may also join her class for her lecture is also useful in other intercross disciplines such as genetic engineering. In fact, students may not like her class, but they have to take it because she is the only professor of botany in the university.

Second, even if she is excellent in teaching, she may not good at researching. Although she brought some grant to the university last two years, what about next year? Whether she will get as many grants as before depends on the performance of the research result of the last two grants, if she failed to accomplish the research, the sponsors may lose credit and stop their support. In addition, given that she may still get grants, what about other professors? If they all can get grants as much as or even more grants than she can, then a raise and promotion will be unnecessary and may even raise discontentment of other professors.

Finally, even if she can contribute a lot to the university, it does not necessarily mean that she will leave if a raise and promotion is not awarded. There are tons of reasons that will decide whether she will leave or not. Perhaps she has signed a contract with the university and it will not expire for another ten years. It is also possible that a salary of $50,000 per year is high enough that no other university can give a better offer. In addition, do a raise and promotion necessary? It is possible that other kinds of praise, such as give her a car or a prize of $10,000, will do just the same and make her stay.

In conclusion, the argument can be more convincing if a more comprehensive investigation can be provided. It can further improved by taking into account other factors that may affect the stay of professor Thomas.

写得很好,我找的问题都是吹毛求疵了.还有我习惯每个论证段最后都用一句话总结,看搂主都是没结尾,个人感觉有点不习惯,但这是风格问题吧,仅供参考.
麻烦帮忙看看我的,谢了
