【51】 Education will be truly effective only when it is specifically designed
to meet the individual needs and interests of each student.
教育只有被专门设计来满足每一个学生个人需求和兴趣的时候才是真正有效率的。
少数和多数
Why do we have to learn such dumb staff? Of all the complaints and protests I heard from my classmates, this is the one most frequently uttered. The answer, however, rarely lies in students' conformity, but lies in the willingness of educators to seek a reform. Although to build an education system to satisfy all the individuals' requirements is unrealistic, educators could still make some improvements to maximize the effectiveness as much as possible.
To begin with, let us take a look at our conventional system of education. Under such a system, it is the teachers who stand in a position of authority. Students have little choice but to passively absorb the information provided by the teacher. In other words, in conventional classrooms there is little opportunity for the students to become actively involved in the learning process. No wonder why my classmates keep complaining about the dumb curriculum. With little interest, students can hardly learn anything useful and adaptive for their future development. To make the education more effective, the priority lies in better motivating the students in learning interests.
However, although it would be perfect if every student had its unique curriculum design which full-fill all of his needs and interests, the real education system is unable to carry out such a dream for lacking of sufficient teachers, money, and time. Yet, in America, a program named “values clarification” is been applied in schools all over the country. According to this philosophy, the schools were not to take part in their time-honored task of transmitting sound moral values; rather, they were to allow the students to “clarify” their own values (which others, including parents, had no “rights” to criticize). The “values clarification” movement clarified the students' wants and desires. Accordingly, educators are able to classify these wants and desires in groups and then improve or even create corresponding curriculum designs for these groups, which to some extent maximize the effectiveness of education in a most proper way.
Besides America, many other countries are also trying on various education reforms in order to better educate the students. For example, in Thailand, there is a novel school with no blackboard, also no conventional teacher but only special supervisors who are in charge of helping the students achieve their "projects". Through the process of accomplishing the project, for example, "selling ice cream", the students will have to absorb knowledge in several aspects such as chemistry, economics, accounting, and even marketing. Such a process is also called "learning by doing", through which the students will find that study is becoming more and more interesting and exciting. Tedious textbook is replaced by absorbing practice. Students are more likely to perform well in the future because they have known how to learn, how to cooperate with others, and also how to deal with failure.
In sum, the conventional system of education is comparatively outdated, in order to better improve the effectiveness of educating, creative and logical reforms have to be put into. We do not need to satisfy everyone, but at least make the progress of learning more interesting and practical. |
