History teaches us only one thing: knowing about the past cannot help people to make important decisions today.

History is a memory of the living yesterday and the premise of the predictable tomorrow. Although we will make important decision today based on the problems right now, knowing about the past could also help us to solve the problems.

As a proverb say, history repeats itself. There are so many events recycling in the process of the development of our society. We could analyze the similar cases in the past and use reference of the solutions when we are in face of the problems nowadays. The experience coming from the predecessors would be the best examples for us to learn from especially in some cases we haven't met up with. Think over some questions below. How can we evaluate the war when the nation is at peace- unless we use the historical materials? How can we understand the influence of technological innovation in the past or the role that beliefs playing in shaping family life, if we don't use what we know about the experience in the past?

Also, study of the history tells us how we can get to where we are now. Analysis on the changes around us in the complex social process would help us to find some new ingredients that contribute to the problems today. We would notice the trend of high rate of cancer in the society. Even if we can use the scientific, especially biological methods to determine some changes in the gene, we have to find out that when the cancer began to increase and how many people suffer from it in the past and at present. We need to look further back to identify the cause of changes. Without those historical data, we would ignore some important factors that would affect this disease.

Furthermore, when making some important decisions today, knowing about the past we could learn a host of lessons so that we could avoid committing the same mistake which happened in the past. Due to the study of history, we can be aware of the various possibilities in the future. We will never forget the disastrous day - Dec 7, 1941. U.S.S fleet suffered a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor by the Japanese Force, which made approximate 3000 people lose their lives and caused a big loss of the USS Armada. We draw lessons from this historical event that the air force is so important in any battle or war and we have to refrain from the thoughts of smugness such as "Nothing will happen to us" or "it is less possible to be attack". When we meet the similar cases next time, the disaster in the past would remind us of the lessons and we would try our best to avoid recommitting the same errors.

Admittedly, with the development of the science and technologies, we have to recognize that the problems emerging the modern social environment would have so many differences from the ones in the past. Although the experience from the past would avail to solve the problems, when making some important decisions, we have to keep the new characters of the problems nowadays in mind and should not simply repeat the solutions in the past; otherwise it would also be doomed to fail.

In sum, history offers a storehouse of information about how people and society behave. We can benefit from the study of history when we met some similar cases and from the analysis of cause and effect of the historical events we can also know about the essential factors which would shape our society. When we make the important decision, we would need all the information mentioned above including the lessons in the past.
