Are tradition and modernization incompatible? In my view, although on the surface preserving tradition is incompatible with modernization in terms of money and resource, we should not overlook the deeper role tradition plays in development. Therefore we should try every effort to make them coexist.

It might seem tempting to agree with the speaker, on the basis that the effort to preserve tradition will occupy money and resources upon which modernization thrive. As the representatives of tradition and culture, the historical architectures take up a lot of land. While modernization means expansion of city, the process of destruction of old buildings and reconstruction of new ones, the historical architectures would inevitably hamper such a process. Today it is quite common to see arguments on newspapers whether a certain historical building has value to be preserved, or it should be destructed and give its way to new buildings. Moreover, preserving the old buildings also requires large sums of money for protection and renovation each year, which would not be economical in the eyes of the modernization supporters. This is the most violent conflict between tradition and modernization. Other forms of conflicts exist as well, such as behavior, dress and patterns of thinking. In a word, such conflicts exist in every aspect of life.

However, the foci would be to narrow if we choose modernization and completely give up tradition, in that tradition plays an important role in a people's development of ideology, morality and economy. As the identification of a nation, tradition is how a people prove its values of existence--the soul of a nation within. Once tradition, the force of cohesion is lost, the people would not distinguish itself from other peoples, therefore losing its identity. It is not exaggerated to say that such result can directly lead to extinction of a nation, because its people no longer know why they are brothers who should stand on the same side against outer pressures. Moreover, losing tradition would harm the development of economy, especially the tourism. Historical building, traditional dresses and customs of a people are most attractive to foreign tourists. Once these elements are lost, the number of visitors in a country will sharply decline. This is obvious: who would like to see a modern building similar to thousands of other ones in his own living place? Therefore we should not ignore the important roles and benefits tradition has.

On balance, what is the best solution for co-existence of both of the two? From self-economical view, a country should mainly focus on development of its modernization, while at the same time select some of the tradition, which best represents its identity, to be preserved. Obviously, since funding for tradition is limited, it is impossible to cover every aspect of it, thus government should preserve the ones with highest value. London city has two districts, the new district and the old one. In the new district, every signs of modernization could be seen, while in the old district, historical buildings are carefully preserved. This is the best solution that other cities should follow.

In the final analysis, the speaker's statement is partly true. Apparently, tradition and modernization are incompatible in terms of money and resources. However we should not neglect the important roles tradition plays. The best thing we could do is to focus on modernization, while providing limited funds for tradition preservation.
