The following appeared as a letter to the editor of a national newspaper.
'Your recent article on corporate downsizing* in the United States is misleading. The article gives the mistaken impression that many competent workers who lost jobs as a result of downsizing face serious economic hardship, often for years, before finding other suitable employment. But this impression is contradicted by a recent report on the United States economy, which found that since 1992 far more jobs have been created than have been eliminated. The report also demonstrates that many of those who lost their jobs have found new employment. Two-thirds of the newly created jobs have been in industries that tend to pay above-average wages, and the vast majority of these jobs are full-time.'
*Downsizing is the process in which corporations deliberately reduce the number of their employees.

In the letter, the author considers the article on corporate downsizing* in the United States is misleading based on a recent report on the United States economy. To support his conclusion, the author uses much evidence which are all from this report. However, in this argument, there are many logical flaws.

The threshold and main problem is the report that the argument only based on. There is no sound evidence or statistics that can prove whether this report is credible and authority. Without any evidence that can prove that report's credibility and truthfulness, the report cited by the author cannot lend any support to the conclusion. Furthermore, the evidence cited from this report to justify the conclusion are all null and groundless. The whole argument can not stand let alone to convince me.

In the second place, even if the report is authority and credible, the detail evidence cited from it also cannot bolster the conclusion. First, the evidence that since 1992 far more jobs have been created than have been eliminated lend nothing to support the conclusion that the unemployment is not so that worse. The author ignores the matter of the sharp increasing in the number of human beings when the job increasing. And since the women's liberation movement, more and more women joined in the work force. The two factors attributed to the rapid increasing in labor force and push more pressure on employment. Second, the other evidence that many of those who lost their jobs have found new employment can also have nothing to do with supporting the conclusion. It is entirely possible that only a small part of the unemployment people found job since 1992, while still a large number of them are out of work. Or perhaps, it cost them much time to find another job for it is a long time since 1992 till now. Therefore, without give more clear evidence, none of the evidence based on the report can contribute establishing the conclusion.

Finally, the author cited that two-thirds of the newly created jobs have been in industries that tend to pay above-average wages, and the vast majority of these jobs are full-time. However, it is not strong evidence. Perhaps the jobs whose wages are above-average wages requires special skills that is too rare or too high, or limited by age, and few of the unemployed workers can meet it. .On the contrary, higher wages usually make unskilled workers out of worker, and act a negative effect on unemployment.

To sum up, the author too subjective and indiscreet to conclude that the United States' corporation did not meet a downsizing only depends on the incredible report. In order to convince me, the author must show me more evidence to prove the report is credible and the details in the report do have important effects on supporting his conclusion.

我觉得还有一点是：失业的人和增值的岗位可能是某几个不同的特定行业。例如失业的人多是纺织公，而1992年以来增加了很多程序员的需求。
