Who give the society something of lasting value, the artists or the critics? This issue is a complex one, and people from different background may offer different answers. In my view, the critics contribute to the discovery of the art work, but their comments on the art are not as valuable as some people believe. And the true value of art is created by the artist rather than the critic.

Admittedly, the critics are helpful in the discovery of the art work, and their comments or debates over certain art work draw people's attention on the art works, which give the artists a chance to be concerned by the public, thus give a chance of the value of the work to be seen by the public. Art is a little bit luxurious for the daily life of most people, who have to earn their everyday bread, look after their family, and worry about tomorrow. While the critics who take evaluating art as their occupation, have the time, energy, as well as responsibility to filter the insightful art works and great artist from the sea of art works and artists in which laypeople may sink. The work of the critics is to arouse people's curiosity and interest to certain art work and thus the public may discover the value of it. An artist without the attention of the critics is less likely to be noticed by the public, thus they may just fade into oblivion.

However, the function of the critics is just drawing the attention of the people, their work has nothing to do with creating the value of the art work. One lasting value artists provide the society is that they create in their works a space for people’s imagination. As a great novelist had said, "there will be a hundred Hamlets if there are a hundred readers." When people are reading a great novel, they enjoy gradually building up the characters in the novel by the writer’s description and their own experience. But the critics always introduce the readers their own Hamlets or arbitrarily tell people what kind of person Hamlet should be. Their comments serve as obstacles rather than kindling for people’s imagination which impede the express of the lasting value of the art work.

On the other hand, one of the efficient ways to spiritual world is through art, not listening to some comments or critique of art. Art, with the passion and thoughts of the artists, directly strike on people’s hearts, spirits, and souls. Critics comment based on theories and rational questioning actually in conflict or at least irrelevant with the emotional stroke that art brings. The great artists are skillful that they usually create a symbol which arouse the true feeling rather than tell a specific story in their work. When different people with different backgrounds and different moods are exposed to the same art work may feel completely different and have their own understanding. Since, the artists awaken different parts of their heart by their works. If people treat art according to the critics’ analysis, and understand art work in the frame of certain theory, reflect to the art works in the same manner. It is more like a kind of conditioning rather than enjoying, a kind of biological responses rather than spiritual journey. The art work is just like the bell and the people like the pitiful dog.  

All in all, critics give a chance to artist to show the lasting value they create to the society, and it is the artists who truly create the lasting value. The artists provide us numerous possibilities, but the critics just show us limited ways which restrain people’s imagination and emotion.
