Technology is a necessary but not always a positive force in modern life.

The last century witnesses the booming of science and technology and their revolutionary power to the world. However, considering the increase of side effects and byproducts brought by technology, more and more people show deep concern with the negative force of technology itself. Some radical thinkers even suspect that advance of modern technology is a Pandora’s box beyond our will to open. As far as I am concerned, I strongly affirm the positive contribution brought by technology. Besides that it is humans rather than technology that should be responsible for the negative effects or disorder relevant to technology.

To begin with, the development and application of tools, machines, materials and process help us solve many problems that puzzle and trouble our predecessors in the past. The invention of incandescence light prolongs the time for work, study and entertainment at night. The use of penicillin inhibits many deathful bacteria threatening to our health. The Hubble space telescope lead us closer to the universe when we observe the stars, planets, nebulas, and galaxies much more convenience. The computer-aided design system frees architects and engineer from tortuous illustration and model construction so as to promote their efficiency and imagination in their creation. At it stands, modern technology profoundly changes our life-style, way of thinking and bring more convenience and leisure to contemporary world.

However, although technology provides us with desired products such as instant communication, faster transportation and omnipresent information highways, technology itself cannot offer us comfort and happiness. We invented faster transportation, but have to rush and commute between home and far-away working place day after day. We invented instant communication, but hardly have time to say hello to our distant relatives or friends. We invented Internet and potable laptop equipment, but are more and more vulnerable to computer virus, junk messages on sex, violence, and writing illiterate. It is not a paradox but also irony that more convenient and instant facilities the less freedom and privacy we possess, and the hastier our life becomes. Modern technology offers us choices to have distinctive lives from our predecessors; but it depends on our own judgment to accept it or not.

Having acknowledged the side-effects brought by technology, I nevertheless claim that the negative force of technology is based on the flaws and weakness of ourselves. For instance, clone, one of most astonishing and challenging biomedical techniques, have been universally criticized by scientists, and moralists and even banned by some government. However, as far as the gene savings is concerned, clone can work well if it is applied in a proper way without defiance of our social mortality. Other similar case is Human Gene Project (HGP), which conducted by an international cooperation involving many countries. However, many human resource consultative companies attempt to use its resource on human psychological and physiological analysis to genetically assess the superiority or inferiority to particular individuals. Hence, since techniques are a double-bladed sword, whether or not it can arouse fortune or disasters is due to how the users will them.

As technology can somewhat result in dangerous or even perilous aftermath to our morality and ethnics, government and authorities should take the responsibilities to formulate and implement powerful laws and rules in its development and application. Considering the problem of ozone depletion thought to be a result of CFC emission, the American government regulated CFC production in the U.S. corporations responsible for releasing CFC into the atmosphere and further seeks international cooperation to control the production of CFC refrigerators globally. Since technology itself continuously advances, the new safely technology should be encouraged to replace the old less inefficient one.

To sum up, due to the aforementioned analysis, technology itself is only a mutual tool free from good or evil. It is human being responsibility to choose how to will it. Whether or not technology can bring pleasure or misery only attributes to the strength or the weakness of its users.
