48. "The study of history places too much emphasis on individuals. The most significant events and trends in history were made possible not by the famous few, but by groups of people whose identities have long been forgotten."
Do the studies of history over emphasize the leaders in most significant events and trends, while neglect the ordinary group of people whose identities have long been forgotten? Answering this complicate question, any extreme response is improper. As far as I am concerned, not neglecting the significance of common public, the historical leaders deserve more emphasis for they are the key to encourage and inspire the power of common people. Moreover, as types of the ordinary people, the leaders embody public identities of the very group.
Admitted, without the steady support and strong power of the public, the famous few would not have affected the history as they really did. As the proverb says” One swallow does not make a summer”, even the most prominent politicians, the most insightful ideologists, or bravest heroes are not able to have influences on a wide range, such as world wide, country wide or through years ,even centuries. They must depend on the power of the most ordinary people. For instance, the Second World War always reminds us some famous names, such as Franklin Roosevelt, Winston Churchill, and Mao Zedong, but it is the ordinary soldiers’ braveness that protected the peace of the world, and without them, can the few political leaders fight against the evils? The answer is definitely no. Fundamentally, the effort of any historical event or trend should, to some extent, attribute to the common public.
However, the great power from ordinary public can only work efficiently with the key- the rational arrangement and lead of eminent individuals. The people do hold imaginative power, but they, probably, do not know how to make full use of it, just as the richest fool does not know how to spend his money. While, the encouragement of the leaders, which usually appears in form of speeches, is the engine to evoke people’s desire to apply their power to make a different society or even a different world. Taking Spartacus evolution in ancient Rome, all the gladiators and slaves would conform to their usual lives until the appearance of him, his braveness and persistence did exploded the anger of the slaves against their owners. Then one of the most famous slave evolution broke out, which affected the history of ancient Rome even of Europe. So, only with the guide of the famous few can the significant events or trends are made possible by the public.
Furthermore, even with a insufficiency of appearance of common people, their identities are not neglected in historical records and forgotten by contemporary people, and what is paramount, the very identities are embodied by the leaders. As “Birds of a feather flock together”, the leaders of an event of a trend is the typical one from the crowd, and accordingly, his words and behaviors can best represent the most significant identities of the crowd. Recording the identity of the leader equals to remembering the distinct identities of the most common people. Consequently, emphasizing on the prominent individuals is a more efficacious method of studying the identities of their group. In addition, for the energy and time limit, it is not capable for historicists to record all the ordinary people, who involved in historical events and trends. Thus, for the consistency of leaders and common people, only emphasizing on the famous individuals will also be proved to be the most convenient and feasible way of recording history.
To sum up, the insufficient records of ordinary people do not stand for a neglect of their identities, while, for the limit of resources, memorizing the elites of the group can not only define the common identities of the group, but also show the function of rational arrangements or leadership from the elites.
