Although generally speak(SPEAKING), to theorize before having data can result in grave mistakes, I would take exception to the speaker's claim, because certain important theories can not be supported by accurate data due to human beings' limitation in measure method and complete dependence on data can easily lead to fallacies, since not all the related factors can manifest them in the form of data.
Few will deny that a sound theory must be established on the basis of enough facts, while data is one sort of most important and reliable facts
(好像有点罗嗦。 Few will deny that a sound theory must be based on facts, of which data is the most important one.)
. That is (TO SAY)without proper data, we risk leaving the establishment to the sheer desire or expectation of some researchers and devolving theorizing into sheer arbitrary imagination. Moreover, data afford a theory significant value in application--the ultimate goal of any theory. If established on the basis of data, it is likely that the theory can be formulated accurately, which means we can utilize the formula to draw direct result and make a forecast on the future or the outcome in similar situation.
However, taking data as necessary basis upon which a sound theory can be established, we might deny certain important theories.(这句要改哦。necessary程度不够,用VITAL之类吧) For the limitation of our measure method, it is not always so fortunate that we can obtain data in need, if so, emphasizing getting before theorizing would amount to postponing such important discoveries or theories forever. Consider Hawkins’ theory about the origin of our universe as an example. Owning to the limitation of our measure methodology(METHODS就好啦), it is impossible for him to quote accurate data in his masterpiece. If we adhere to the speaker's claim that no data, no sound theory, the significant discovery must be unacceptable to the mass. The fact indicates that when we fully accept the speaker's claim, we must declare abortion to certain well-established and important theories.
In the concern with the trend of overemphasis on data, lies another reason I take exception to the speaker's claim. In fact, when researchers completely depend on data to draw their theories, they are also on the verge of fallacy. For not all the facts in the real world can be abstracted into data, which might have significant influence on the conclusion of a theory. To find illustrating evidences, one needs look no further than the trend in economics, which underscore the mathematic method in economic study and incline to model the real mechanism. Though such trend standardizes the expression of certain economic theories, it also overlooks certain important factors that cannot manifest themselves in data. As a result, such models are poor in forecasting the real economic operations around us. In short, only data, even absolutely accurate can not necessarily breed a sound theory, for many related factors can not be abstracted into data.(这句有问题哦。
many related factors can not be abstracted into theory? )
In final analysis, although generally speak, lack of data, which is one sort of most important and accurate evidence upon which most of theories are established, can result in grave mistakes, it would be presumptuous for the speaker to take data as necessities for any theory. For certain limitation in measure can render such data unavailable, and overemphasis on data can also give birth to severe fallacies. |
