As the emergency of television and worldwide computer connection, it becomes possible and easy for people to look something in remote place. So people can be familiar with the landscape in the places where they have never gone to and therefore the author claims that tourism will soon be outdated. In my opinion, this can partly substitute to tourism, but not all.
Of course, it is possible for people to appreciate the landscape of one place and learn the history and other things of it where they do not go to for some reason through television and worldwide web. In some sense they are good substitutions to tourism. There are many programs on television that introduce the beautiful places in all over the world. If one is interesting to some place, he or she can find the relevant photographs and other introductions to the place through worldwide web, generally speaking. In most cases, the most beautiful photographs of one place appearing on the television and worldwide web are not what one sees because of weather, time, or other reasons when he or she go there. For some people, it is enough to "tour" through television and worldwide web.
Admittedly, tourism and "tourism" through television and worldwide web are not the identical things. When we tour, we see the things by our own eyes, hear the things by our own ears, tough the things by our own hands, and sense the things by our own heart which are all chosen by ourselves. Going to another remote city where only few friends know me, I was far away from the disappointing result, the people knowing my failure and the circumstance where I prepared for the test, and therefore thought over what I should do, what I could do, how I should do sometimes in a happy and relaxed circumstance. At the same time I had to walk, climb. This means tourism is a funning way to take exercise.
In sum, television and worldwide web are able to provide something that people want to get from tourism, but not all. The things that we see are not all things we can get from tourism. The most important and valuable thing is the process that is deserved to sense by our heart.
