Based on the seemingly attractive advantages of Clearview, the arguer draws a conclusion that Clearview should be a top choice for anyone seeking a place to retire. To support the conclusion, the statement supplies evidences that the spectacular natural beauty and consistent climate in Clearview, falling housing cost and lower real estate taxes level, new programs promised by the mayor, and excellent health care for the elders. However, these alone neither constitutes a logical argument in favor of the conclusion nor provides compelling support making the argument sound. The arguer ignores some other important factors that attract the elders, the absolute level of price and taxes, and the professional quality of its doctors. In addition, he haven't take the validity of the mayor's promise into account.
In the first place, only beautiful natural scenes and consistent climate are insufficient instance to support that the Clearview is a top choice for retire people. What do the retirees concern? To answer this question, a wide-rounded survey is necessary, and many other elements, say, social security, agreeable neighborhood, lots of public parks, are very likely to be contained into the criteria. From a recent survey, the factor of friendly people is of increasing importance, since loneliness is what the elder concerns most. A city with beautiful scene can be a place of interest, but a city without friendly citizens can not be a ideal place for retirees.
In addition, the declining cost of housing and lower real estate taxes are taken as attractive factors for retirees, but the evidence are too vague to be informative. The arguer fails to mention the absolute level of the cost, as it may be still high compared with the general level of other cities, so the retirees may can't afford it. Moreover, the tendency of the price are not indicated in the argument, if the declining tend during the last year doesn't continue, whether the retirees can still afford it is open to question. Similarly, relative lower taxes in Clearview may still be too high to the retirees. Besides this problem, the levels of other kind taxes rather than real estate taxes are not mentioned in the statement. Before our sensible decision, these information about the housing cost and taxes must be available.
Before I come to my conclusion, it is necessary to point out another flaw that undermines the argument. That is whether the mayor of Clearview will keep his words to carry new programs to improve schools, streets, and public services. Politicians always make such charming promises to citizens for some political goal, and the validity of such promise is open to question. Moreover, retirees should not be too optimized for the health care in Clearview, where has far greater number of physicians than national average. First, the large number of physicians does not promise a great health care if the professional qualities of those doctors. As a saying goes, quantity does not mean quality. Second, the health care fee must be taken into account, the retirees can not enjoy good health care if they can not afford the expensive cost.
To sum up, the conclusion lacks credibility because the evidence cited in the analysis does not lend strong support to what the arguer maintains. If the argument includes other factors attracting the retirees, supply information about the housing cost taxes, and health care conditions in the area in more detail, and prove the validity of the mayor's promise, it would have been more thorough and adequate. |
