In the art field, artist and critic are the two kinds of important persons being of great help to ameliorate the art works. So holding some different ideas from the author’s, I think that artists do leave the whole society something worthy of lasting, while the critics are also the ones will endow us some far-reaching things concerning about the art’s values.

Undoubtedly, artists, especially their innovated and new ideas create those art works, sometimes masterpieces. Only those art works what are the fruits out of artists’ contemplation and exertion, not the results out of some cynical purposes, possess the lasting values that all of us should esteem. We know that great art works always contain some connotations like artists’ feeling, ideas or even candid attitudes towards the society or the surroundings they indulge in. As an evidence to show a specific time, arts works are always taken as survey subjects that can provide historians and researchers with critical information they hope for to evaluate something or even an era. Therefore, we think that artists do create the things of lasting values to the whole society.

Ostensibly, artists seem to be the only element in leaving those valuable things to the society. But actually, critics also are being of great importance. It is the critics that discover the values the art works for people. Let us see a example, during Vincent Van Gogh’s time, no one regarded his paintings as priceless works, even no one bought his productions mainly because his works would be unutterably difficult for the people of that time to understand. Until those critics advocated and explained, people began to realize the value of his paintings, were able to see the connotations inside his works like the sunflower or the red vineyard. So we should say that critics are such kind of people lead us to appreciate those profound art works and discover their lasting values at most times.

As far as we know, words from critics are strict, even sometimes appear to be cruel or overstated. But we can’t deny their effects in improving the arts. Basically, critics obtain the standards to assess whether art work is good or not, although sometimes it is subjective. Also, critics are more connected to the publics than those artists; they better know population’s taste and interests. In that case, they will convey some information to the artists in the process of criticizing their productions. After all, one of most important purposes of artists is to create some works to meet the needs of people, even though a small group. Only those productions catering to most people can enjoy the lasting values and won’t be abandoned easily.

In conclusion, we should involve several elements when we are dwelling on such a question that who gives society something of lasting value. In order to leave the whole human being’s world with more precious things, neither artists’ creations nor critics’ strength can be neglected.(494 words/39 minutes)
