People have been known for long of the importance of teamwork. Working in a team and cooperating makes people do their job more effectively. However, the role of competition should not be overlooked. For, it is competition that motivates people to pursue better lives.

Working in team increases the productivity of people to a great extent. The work can be easily done by a team in one day may take an individual a week with great endeavor. People have been long aware of this. And teamwork has always been an important part in people's lives, since human have ever existed. In the ancient time, people living in tribes. Men hunt; while women prepare food and take care of the children. Young people do strenuous jobs; while the old were assigned to lighter work. The tribe is a team, every individual do different things to make the whole team functions and ensure the benefit of all the team members. That is how our ancestors fought together against the severe natural surrounding, underwent starvation, developed survival skills and gradually advanced.

And with the great labor division in recent hundreds of years, the demand of team work is even greater. Now, almost no one can comprehend all the knowledge and handle all the skills, for we are living in a society where new information and technology are booming in a horrible speed. Most people can only possess a relatively small piece of the knowledge. And only when these pieces are put together, can a picture be form. Only when people with different knowledge come and work together, can the tasks be finished. One need to look no further than the field of science to see it is true. In modern laboratory, scientists with different academic background form a team to study into a phenomenon. Take the laboratory I was working in this semester for example. In order to address the issue of the relationship between the epidermic tissue and the tumor cell, we have different experts in a team: a PhD in physics who in charge of the physical interreaction between the epidermic tissue and tumor cell, a professor of chemistry who analyzes the chemical changes in the interrecation, and I a students of medical science who can provide some information about the epidermic tissue and the tumor cell. A team with experts in different field is effective, in that every people are working in the part they are more familiar with, thus they could do the job better, and forming these part together, the task which is complicated to every of the experts can be smoothly accomplished. To a good team, one plus one is larger than two.

However, the importance of competition cannot be overlooked. It is true, cooperation which is the spirit of teamwork, can promote the solving of different problems. But, as a motivation, its effectiveness cannot compare to competition. Why most of the pupils trying to be the top of their class? Why all of the companies endeavoring to provide better products? Why are all the nations striving to strengthen themselves? The answers to the questions above are the same--they are all driven by the pressure of competition. Without competition, fewer students will work hard; without competition, fewer companies will try to improve their products; and without competition, less may be many countries will be satisfied with themselves. It is competition that promoted the development of the individuals and the society.

Cooperation makes people more productive, and competition motivates people to pursue new lives. A balance is needed between the two.
