It is the artist, not the critic,* who gives society something of lasting value.
*a person who evaluates works of art, such as novels, films, music, paintings, etc.
------正文------
The speaker contends it is the artist, not the critic, who gives us the works of lasting value. I fundamentally agree with him. In my point of view, although critic does can bring us valuable something, the truly lasting value is produced by the artist.
First of all, admittedly, the critic gives the society something of merit. Most of us do not major in aesthetics or arts; as a result, our ability of comprehension of the works done by artists may be limited. Then the effect that critics can help us justice the artists' works, of the critic was revealed at this moment. For example, Piccaso, who was acknowledged to be the most important artist in 20th century, painted a masterpiece called The Old Guitarist in his blue period. It is more likely for us to consider it to express the life of the lower class in Paris. Yet the critic thinks he intended to portray the human alienation because there was no room for the guitarist to raise his lowered head. Critics may think about the works more deeply owing to their professional eyes. Thus, to some extent, I concede that critics contribute us with some valuable thing such as helping us us understand the works.
However, the thoughts of critics can be various even on one work, which may bring us some troubles to comprehending the works. We may lack of enough professional knowledge to distinguish the comment done by critics. It seems that each critic has their own opinions on certain work such as the diverse commentary on the Vinci's Mona Lisa which is one of the most well-known works in the world. Yet, so far, we still cannot make sure that who is lady in the painting and its true meaning. Furthermore, the aim of some critics may not be to remark the works and help average people to understand them, but often pronounce some weird or ridiculous criticism which is opposite to or far away from the common thoughts on some masterpieces by excellent artists. They intend to catch public’s eyes and make themselves well-known. Also, criticism on certain work is often variable during generation from generation. Therefore, critics may not always bring us the lasting value.
In fact, the one who truly give us the works of lasting value is the artist. Their marvellous works are imperishable---whether in what place or in what time. It is space-time property of the works which can give us lasting value. Shakespeare, for instance, the famous British playwright and poet had produced many excellent works in his lifetime, many of which have been translated in scores of languages in the world. His plays were always performaned on the stage in all ages and attracted many people to appreciate each time. People are never tired of enjoying his works. Even in our text books in school, usually, there are several famous plays such as Hamlet and Othello. They are all helpful for us to study the English either. It is easy for us to see that the merit Shakespeare gave us crossed time and break through the block of the region. There is another example about Dali, who is a Spanish artist and well known about his surrealist works. In 2002, his over 350 works was exhibited in several Chinese provinces itinerantly. Only in Beijing, over 80 thousand tickets were sold and varieties of keepsakes were almost sold out. Many Chinese people love his works, although he is a Spanish artist. Hence, it is the artist that truly bring us the thing of lasting value.
To sum up, although I concede that critics do give us some valuable thing which can help us to comprehend the artists' works, their diverse judgments may confuse our views. Actually, it is artist who give the society something of lasting value, which can cross the space-time and be appreciated by people from generation to generation. |
