To some extent, the speaker may ignore some situations that human beings cannot choose, however, on balance, I tend to agree with the statement that choices/ options/ selections are abundant around us. Since the development of science and the appearance of the modern values, all of which enable us to make choices.

On the one hand, I concede that there is something we cannot make options, no matter how hard we try or no matter what means we use. Our background is most convincing example. We cannot choose whom to be our parents, whether their rich or poor, whether they are kind-hearted or abominable, the day when we opened our eyes, all these things had had been set. What is more, we cannot choose where to be our birthplace-------whether it is a prosperous metropolis or a remote countryside, whether it is a beautiful one with impressing scenes or it is a notorious place with numerous crimes, all of which are out of our control. And our mother tongue-------whether we speak Chinese, English, French or any other kinds of language is beyond our choice as well, even if we can acquire other languages by studying, the fact is that our mother languages will never change.

On the other hand, such a highly-developed world we live today, it seems that everything is optional in almost every situation except those I pointed out above. First of all, thanks to the developing of science which provides more choices to our human beings. For instance, we can choose to be a male or a female, it might be unthinkable for people in ancient times to realize such a dream, however, currently, by the help of the high -tech medication, our sex is absolutely alternative, we can choose. Moreover, people in the modern society can decide their own working patterns. To work traditionally or to work more freely is under our control. We can choose to work at home, using the internet to communicate with our colleagues, to participate a convention and the like. -----that is the modern way of working, SOHU, also our another choice of working ways.

Secondly, as our values become more and more different from before, numerous things once considered to be compulsories to us now turn to be another picture. Examples are flourishing around us. In the past, women had no choice but to have babies after their marriages, yet, in the present days, couples can choose not to have babies so that they can maintain the so called "romantic world", and people around feel as if it is a common thing when hearing such news, so there comes the DINK family. In addition, the youths today can choose not to get marry but live together owing to the development of our values, which was also hard to imagine in the past.

To sum up, from what I discussed above, we can safely come to the conclusion that seldom do people cannot make choices when confronted with an event, which illustrates that our society becomes more tolerant and shows its respect to people's rights.
