"The most essential quality of an effective leader is the ability to remain consistently committed to particular principles and objectives. Any leader who is quickly and easily influenced by shifts in popular opinion will accomplish little."

I partly agree with the speaker's contention that an effective leader should possess the essential quality of remaining consistently committed to particular principles and objectives, but in some situation, it is also requisite to accept the mass opinions. In addition, an effective leader should be able to implement the optimal method to accomplish the mission.

To begin with, remaining consistently committed to particular principles and objectives make the leader standing firm among his followers. A leader, from the one running a small group of employees in office to the one leading hundreds of thousands of people in a country, is the one that elected by majority and his every decision is linked with the whole team's or country's benefits. Without persistence in his own principles and objectives, the ordinary people may not believe in his ability to promoting the mass. Just glance at the famous leaders in history, the attribute of persistence is common in them. If not persisting in implementing the new policy through the America in her depressed time, the economy of America may not be vigorous as it is today, and Roosevelt may not be reelected three times as the president; without persistence in the belief of abolishing the racial discrimination, Martin Luther King may not be admired by millions of people. Obviously, the quality of remaining consistently committed to the principles and objectives is important for an effective leader.

However, persisting in the principles does not mean that ignoring the reflections from people all the time. On the contrary, an effective leader should always listen to the sound of the mass people which could most accurately express their thought and wish. Only after knowing the followers' thought, could a leader have a comprehensive analysis and adopt an appropriate strategy to accomplish the mission. Otherwise, making decision merely depending on one's own idea, the leader is inclined to become an autocrat and deviate from the original intention. There is no better an example than Hitler and Mussolini, the two notorious dictators, who bring an unprecedented catastrophe to human beings. Thus, a smart leader should absorb suggestions and opinions from the mass people to help making important decisions.

Furthermore, the leader should apperceive the situation and the state of the surrounding, and determine which approach will most likely lead to the accomplishment of the overall mission. A leader serve during different time periods marked by different states of the overall environment. What a leader needs to consider, is both the special state and the mass people's opinions, and the leader has to balance the two sides and make a decision appropriately. Take the two presidents of America for example-- Clinton and Bush. Both of them are considered strong and effective leaders in history, however, their policy are totally different from each other's. In Clinton's time, the American economy was steady, and Clinton seemed to listen more to the public; while in Bush's time, both the recession and the terrorists attacked America, thus he decisively took some measures towards the terrorists and the economy which were opposed by the public but actually benefited the nation that time. Thus, what a leader should persist is the appropriate principles and objectives which are the optimal in the temporal circumstance.

To sum up, the attribution of persisting the principles and objectives is the essential quality an effective leader should possess, and proper acceptance of the public opinions is requisite. What's more, an effective leader should be able to choose the approach which is most likely to accomplish the mission under the overall environment.

I partly agree with the speaker's contention that an effective leader should possess the essential quality of remaining consistently committed to particular principles and objectives, but in some situation, it is also requisite to accept the mass opinions. In addition, an effective leader should be able to implement the optimal method to accomplish the mission.(开头写的很好了,向你学习ing)

To begin with, remaining consistently committed to particular principles and objectives make the leader standing firm(firmly) among his followers. A leader, from the one running a small group of employees in office to the one leading hundreds of thousands of people in a country, is the one that elected by majority(直接说is elected by majority 好些吧) (而且我觉得这句话在这里没什么作用把)and his every decision is linked with the whole team's or country's benefits. Without persistence in his own principles and objectives, the ordinary people may not believe in his ability to promoting the mass. Just glance at the famous leaders in history, the attribute of persistence is common in them. If not persisting in implementing the new policy through the America in her depressed time,(Great Depression大萧条时期) (in America during the Great Depression )the economy of America may not be vigorous as it is today, and Roosevelt may not be reelected three times as the president; without persistence in the belief of abolishing the racial discrimination, Martin Luther King may not be admired by millions of people. Obviously, the quality of remaining consistently committed to the principles and objectives is important for an effective leader.我觉得在这里应该进一步论述一下为什么Without persistence in his own principles and objectives, the ordinary people may not believe in his ability to promoting the mass
Thus, a smart leader should absorb suggestions and opinions from the mass people to help making important decisions.这段论述的听充分的

To sum up, the attribution of persisting the principles and objectives is the essential quality an effective leader should possess, and proper acceptance of the public opinions is requisite. What's more, an effective leader should be able to choose the approach which is most likely to accomplish the mission under the overall environment.

题目中不是说是...influences by shifts in popular opinion...
