The following article appeared in a recent issue of a college newspaper.
'Among all students who graduated from Hooper University over the past five years, more physical science majors than social science majors found permanent jobs within a year of graduation. In a survey of recent Hooper University graduates, most physical science majors said they believed that the prestige of Hooper University's physical science programs helped them significantly in finding a job. In contrast, social science majors who found permanent employment attributed their success to their own personal initiative. Therefore, to ensure that social science majors find permanent jobs, Hooper University should offer additional social science courses and hire several new faculty members who already have national reputations in the social sciences.'

In this argument, the author claims that Hooper University should offer additional social science courses as well as new faculty members with national reputations in social sciences. To reach the assertion the author points out that: Among the graduates from Hooper University over the past five years more physical science majors than social science majors had jobs with a year of graduation and survey tell us that most physical science majors think the prestige of the university help them to find the job compared to the social science majors. However, there are several problems with the assertion.

First, the fact that more physical science majors than social science majors had jobs can not indicate that it is harder for social science majors to find jobs. It is possible that every year there are much more physical science majors graduated than social science majors, and even if all the social science majors find jobs, the number of them is still smaller than the physical science majors. Thus, without the percentage of the total amount of each diction who find jobs, the author can not conclude that it is harder for social science majors to find jobs.

Secondly, no evidence can prove that social science majors who find permanent jobs did not gain benefit from the prestige of the university. Although the survey tell us that social science majors who find permanent jobs attributed their success to their own personal initiative, but they may neglect the important role played by the prestige of the university. Thus, lacking the evidence that the social science majors' success have little relevance with the university's prestige, we can not conclude that the social science majors' success is because of their initiative.

Thirdly, granted that the two problems mentioned above are not exist, no evidence can indicate that offering additional social science courses as well as new faculty members with national reputations in social sciences can work. It is possible that the students in social science do not study very hard so that their grades are low. Thus lacking the evidence that the conclusion can work, the author's conclusion is suspicious.

Finally, there are also some problems can weak the author's conclusion. The author ignores the future possibility that the social science jobs may be provided; the job finding consequence in only one year after graduating may be insufficient.

In sum, to role out the problems mentioned above to better reach the conclusion the author need clear evidence including following: percentage of the total amount of each diction who find jobs during enough time; the evidence that the social science majors' success have little relevance with the university's prestige; the evidence that the conclusion can work.

I think another flaw in the original argument lies here.

Since most successful social science students contribute their finding permanent job to personal initiative. Maybe this exactly indicates the key to social science students' finding a permanent job is their individual initiativeness, rather than prestige of the professor or school. Therefore, what the university should do so as to help social science graduates get permanent job is to introduce some projects and ex-curriculum activities that help stimulate students' originality, instead of hiring new professors or additional courses.
