Copper occurs in nature mixed with other minerals and valuable metals in ore, and the proportion of copper in the ore can vary considerably. However, in my view, the author's claim is ill grounded.
To begin with, the speaker's assumption rests on the fact that the new technologies can use up less electricity than the older method to process the same amount of raw ore, especially when the proportion of copper in the ore is high. However, the speaker fails to consider the situation that if the proportion of the copper in ore is very low, whether the new method could also save electricity. It is entirely possible that when the proportion is low, the electricity used up by the new technologies is even higher than the one used up by the older method, and if in most cores the proportion of the copper is low, then the expectation of declining of the electricity will not happen.
In addition, even if the new method could also save energy when the proportion is high, the speaker still cannot convince me because he does not inform whether the copper extracted by the new method is as pure as the older method does. It is quite possible that the copper is not pure when using the new method, and then another process to extract for purer copper is needed that will use up even more electricity than the old method. Thus, failing to consider this possibility, I can hardly believe that the new method will use up less energy.
Finally, even the speaker could substantiate all the foregoing assumptions, the speaker still could not hastily come to the conclusion that we can expect the amount of electricity used up by the copper-extraction industry to decline significantly. The speaker fails to support more information about the new technologies, such as the cost of the machine, the side effects when processing and we even do not know whether the new technology comes to birth or it is only the conception of the speaker. In other words, perhaps the new method could not put into production at all.
In conclusion, to better evaluate the argument, we need more convincing evident and information. |
