208. "The way people look, dress, and act reveals their attitudes and interests. You can tell much about a society's ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people."

How can we know a society’s ideas and values? The speaker claims that via observing the appearance and behavior of society members we can know much about its ideas and values. In my view, however, I don’t agree with that for the appearance and behavior of people could not reflect the society's ideas and values much and deeply.

Admittedly, sometimes people’s appearance and behavior can reflect their idea and values.For instance, when we meet a lady who wears robe and veils leaving only eyes out, we can infer that she may be want keep her distance with others. Furthermore, when we find all the ladies around us dress in the same way, that is no doubt that we are in the Islamic country where there people believe in Islam. And the way Islamic women dress indicates that in the Islamic countries the status of women are comparatively low for their different society’s ideas and values. Turn next to the behaviors can also embody characteristics of a society. If a society whose members are enthusiastic for voting while in another society whose members never take a vote, we can know from it the former society might place a high value on democracy while the latter might place a low value. All above-mentioned can prove that sometimes the appearance and behavior of the people can display their attitudes and interests, moreover, the society's ideas and values.

However, in most case merely by observing people’s appearance and behavior we can hardly learn much about their true attitude and interesting or society’s ideas and values. Examples are affluent around us. The very example I can point out is that nowadays people especial youth are very likely to follow the fashion, so there are many young people in china follow the fashion that was very popular in the neighbouring countries especial in South Korea. They put their every effort to imitate popular figure’s behavior in South Korea, and as a result the youth in the two different countries are all dressed in the similar clothes and have the similar hairstyle and even the similar behavior. There are apparently different in their ideas and values, however, it is hardly to distinguish them when they appear at the same time in front of you. Another example is that there are many people- such as doctors, polices and judge- wear especial uniform that can show me nothing more than their different jobs. And the same is that people wear heavy in winter while few in summer and these only reflects the climatic environment. Therefore only by observing people’s appearance and behavior we can learn very limited about the society’s idea and values.

In order to attain enough information about the society’s ideas and values, we should study in an all-round way and take many other factors into account. From studying the society’s law we can learn much about what is forbidden by it and that reveals the society values. We also should read the literatures that reflect people’s attitude and ideas, and through it we can know more about the ethic and morality of a society. In addition, we may also need to find out what is the society economic and educational system that are very important for us to understand the society deeply.

To sump up, the human society is the most complicated system in the world and people’s appearance and behavior actually can reveals the society ideas and values in some respects. Nevertheless, if we want to tell much about it, we must take more factors into account.
