115.The following appeared in a clothing industry trade journal in the country of Sartoria.
"A popular fashion magazine recently conducted a survey of consumers' opinions about clothing prices, using prepaid mailing envelopes. Eighty-nine percent of the approximately 20,000 respondents reported that they were either "dissatisfied" or "very dissatisfied" with current clothing prices. The large number of responses indicates that the Sartorian clothing industry is at risk. Given the survey results, clothing manufacturers must find a way to reduce prices in order to keep their existing customers and maintain their businesses."
The topic claimed that Sartorian clothing industry should reduce prices for the sake of keeping their market share and maintaining their business. To support the conclusion, the result of the survey was cited. However, after careful and thorough consideration, the argument is rather dubious.
In the first place, the arguer cannot ensure that the result of survey that the argument rests on is trustworthy. On one hand, the argument provides no evidence that the survey is statistically reliable. Perhaps the subjects are circumscribed to a certain area. So it is unable to represent the whole consumers of the country. On the other hand, the survey should be conducted under scientific process. In other words, the surveyors should be neutral and make sure that the subjects are the selective samples. In addition, the data of 20,000 respondents lends no credible support to the conclusion. Maybe the respondents only account for a small percent of the whole subjects. So the data make no sense in statistics. Any of scenarios, if true, will serve to deeply undermine the conclusion.
Even assuming the reliability of the survey’s result is undeniable, whether the Sartorian clothing industry is at risk remains a question. As we know, the consumers choose to buy one clothes rather than another based on many factor such as the style, the raw materials, the brand and so on, whereas the price only accounts for one of these factors. Although consumers are dissatisfied with the current clothing prices Perhaps consumers are more willing to buy more clothes than ever regarding of the prices. In this case, the Sartorian clothing industry will be more prosperous than ever before, let alone in dilemma.
Moreover, the arguer fails to consider other possible alternatives that may be better solve the problems. As we know, the development of industry is closely linked to the availability of propaganda and human resource in useful forms. Maybe consumers know little about the products of clothing manufacturers in Sartorian, so it will be wiser to broadcast the products through advertisement rather than reducing prices. Also the manufacturers should employ more proficient workers other than neophyte or apprentice. Only considering other possible methods thoroughly, could the arguer convincingly lead to the conclusion.
In sum, the conclusion is neither pervasive nor well--present. To better support the conclusion, the arguer should provide more and clear evidence about the reliability of the study and the fact that the clothing industry is actually at risks. What’s more, the arguer should consider other possible alternatives thoroughly. |
