I totally agree with the speaker's opinion that publicly owned wilderness areas should be preserved by government, no matter they are near or remote from people, because wilderness areas have affinity with human being.

First of all, wilderness areas may have lots of rare resources, which are very important to the country and even the whole world, in addition, wilderness areas play an vital role in keeping a balanced nature and ecological system. On the one hand, there may be many rare animals or plants in wilderness areas, some of which are possibly close to extinct. There are two advantages to preserve these areas to maintain the living environment of the animals and plants: one is to make those animate beings going down, which are actually a great treasure to the descendent; another is to provide plenty resources for scientific studies, such as the evolution of species. On the other hand, wilderness areas, especially forests, are vital to the balance of ecological system. As an aphorism says that forests are like the hung of Earth, they have direct relation to the air’s quality. As is known to everyone, during recent years, with the disafforestation largely, the atmosphere has changed greatly and the quality of air has become more and more worse. Therefore, to protect the wilderness areas is to ensure human being’s lives.

Secondly, even a few people could cause serious damage to a remote wilderness area. The fact that few people can access wilderness areas does not mean the threat to the areas is low. Take a relatively extreme example. If someone enters a wilderness area and drops a burning cigarette, it can bring a large conflagration and finally destroy the whole area. Consequently, government should not judge whether a wilderness area need preservation only by the distance of it from people or the number of people who can access it.

Last but not the least, only the government can preserve publicly owned wilderness areas most efficiently. Although there are often many nongovernmental organizations to propagandize the importance of wilderness areas, they are not enough. Since the wilderness areas are so important to a country or the whole world and if destruct has occurred, it cannot reverse, they must be protected perfectly safely. Government is most suitable for the work because it can enact some rules or laws to ensure wilderness areas’ safety compulsively.

To sum up, whether from the huge function of wilderness areas or from the government's responsibility, government should bring into play its role of protecting publicly owned wilderness areas.
