Van gogh.
comet Halley.
Newton, Einstein.
Nobel prize。

The greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them, not by their contemporaries.
The greatest individuals, as it defines, refer to those who make great contributions in the realm of science, humanities, or social science. These contributions, which distinguish celebrities from normal people, may be come to be realized in their own times, or may be recognized by the public only several centuries later. Whether the greatness of individuals can be decided by their contemporaries or just only by those who lived after them, largely depends on whether their contributions can be wildly come to exemplify great influences on public immediately. I firmly believe that we should acknowledge the greatness of those people as soon as possible for the sake of justice to those people's endeavor.
If we cast a look back at the long history of human beings, it is easily to identify that the majority of celebrities we concede now were seldom recognized by their contemporaries. In the realm of science, for example, Bruno was sentenced to death as his new idea was conflict with his contemporaries. Darwin, who discovered the theory of evolution, outraged the religious members and even the public. In the literature area, Van Gogh, a greatest painter, came to be reverenced only after his death. Such situations are also quite common in all other realms such as in philosophy, humanity and so forth.
The reason behind these phenomenon is that those celebrities' ideas, conceptions, cognitive abilities transcend their times. Their greatness is not fully exhibited to the public, or their ideas are beyond their contemporaries’ ability to understand or accept it. Bruno, Copernicus, and Darwin are all such examples. Halley, a great physicist, was also not appreciated by his contemporaries. By carefully and long time observing the orbit of comets, and complex calculation, Halley conclude that some comets are just ordinary objects that run around the sun periodically, and forecasted that the comet Halley, which was named by his name, will come to near the earth again 76 years later. His great discovery was not conceded by the public until 35 years later after his death. The comet Halley’s reappearance approved Halley’s forecast.
While it is true that in many cases that those who live after the celebrities may have a better and thorough estimation of their greatness, their contemporaries are also have the abilities to evaluate their contributions. There are also some great individuals who were recognized by the society in their own time. Newton, for instance, was the most outstanding physicist in his time, and regarded as the founder of classic mechanics. Albert Einstein, who wrote 3 great papers that had profound influence on modern physics when he was only 25 years old in 1905, was known all around the world in his time. Those great individuals’ contributions have immediate influence on people’s live or the contemporary science granted their greatness be recognized at their own time.
In fact, along with the development of mass media and the increase in people’s cognitive faculty, nowadays’ celebrities are more easily to be recognized by the public. Nobel Prize, which is offered to those who make great contributions to the society, is actually a sign of public’s more awareness to those great individuals. This is really a good trend in some extent. To make an outstanding achievement, it requires one to work diligently and persistently. Thus, those celebrities deserve public’s reverence in their own time. For most of people, it really discourages one’s confidence without the public’s recognition of their contributions and greatness.
Nevertheless, people in our times should feel lucky for that the public are willing to and able to recognize their greatness. As the public’s ability increases, it is sure that the greatness of individual will be more easily recognized by their contemporaries. |
