Argument145

题目:
A new study collected data that shows that people who snore are more likely to gain weight than are people who do not snore. It is well known that many people who snore also stop breathing frequently during the night for a few seconds, a condition called sleep apnea. The interruption of breathing wakes the person—often so briefly that the waking goes unnoticed—and can leave the person too tired during the day to exercise. Anyone who snores, therefore, should try to eat less than the average person and to exercise more.

In this argument, the writer tries to convince us that people who snore are more likely to gain weight and they should try to eat less than the average people and to exercise more. I contend, however, a careful scrutiny would reveal several critical flaws as follows that undermine its reasoning.

To begin with, the writer provides no evidence to ensure that the survey indicating the causal relation between snoring and weight gain is statistically reliable. Perhaps the sample size is so insufficient that it cannot be representative; or perhaps the selection procedure happens to exclude people who do not snore but never fail to gain weight. Thus, absent more specific information about the sample size and selection procedure, it is impossible to assess the credibility of the study.

In addition, even if the study proves convincing, the writer falsely ascribes the weight gain to the sleep apnea, disregarding a series of other possible factors. For example, it is entirely possible that some other medical condition, traits or habits of people who snore exert a negative impact on their weight. Therefore, without ruling out these and other possibilities, hardly can I be convinced that weight gain is attributable to apnea.

Thirdly, even assuming that apnea is the only factor contributing to weight gain of people who snore, the contention is problematic in certain other respects as well. First, the writer assumes that apnea could give rise to tiredness, however, it is not necessarily the case. Since the waking caused by the interruption of breathing goes unnoticed, chances are good that people may not suffer from apnea and can hardly be tired during the day. Second, the writer deems that exercise would help keep weight, but no evidence is provided to show the efficiency of exercise in terms of keeping figure. Therefore, it is such assumptions that undermine the argument.

Finally, even though the assumptions above can be justified, the writer arbitrarily draws a broad conclusion that anyone who snores should try to eat less and exercise more than average person. Common sense inform me that people who snore but are disabled or lack of nutrition may not need to follow the writer’s advice. Perhaps, what is most import is to find the exact cause of snoring, otherwise, the recommendation is partially effective at best.

In sum, hardly can the argument prove persuasive due to lack of sufficient evidence and well-rounded consideration mentioned above. To further bolster the contention, the writer must show that snoring indeed brings about weight gain, perhaps by providing a more reliable study and far more detailed evidence.
