The following was written as a part of an application for a small business loan by a group of developers in the city of Monroe.
'A jazz music club in Monroe would be a tremendously profitable enterprise. Currently, the nearest jazz club is 65 miles away; thus, our proposed club, the C Note, would have the local market all to itself. Plus, jazz is extremely popular in Monroe: over 100,000 people attended Monroe's jazz festival last summer, several well-known jazz musicians live in Monroe, and the highest-rated radio program in Monroe is 'Jazz Nightly,' which airs every weeknight. Finally, a nationwide study indicates that the typical jazz fan spends close to $1,000 per year on jazz entertainment. It is clear that the C Note cannot help but make money.

        The arguer recommends that building a jazz music club in Monroe would be a very profitable enterprise. To support the recommendation the arguer cites the nearest jazz club is 65 miles away so their club would have the local market all itself, and several well-known jazz musicians live in Monroe. The author also cites that a nationwide study indicates that typical jazz fan spends a lot per year on jazz entertainment. Careful examination of this supporting evidence, however, reveals that it lends little credible support to the arguer’s claim.

        To begin with, the author indicates that their proposed club would have the local market all to itself. Accordingly, the arguer rests on the situation that the nearest jazz club is 65 miles away. Yet, we are not informed their club would have the local market all to itself, it is entirely possible that people in Monroe are more motivated by the formal club. Perhaps the formal club has the hottest singers to perform there, where people are more interested in. So even if the new-built-up club is nearer, people would rather go to the formal one. If this is the case, the recommended acquisition would not serve the arguer’s goal.

        Secondly, based on the fact that several well-known jazz musicians live in Monroe, the author infers that it would be profitable to build a jazz club there. However, this is not necessarily the case. It is possible that living in Monroe does not indicate they would perform there------let alone jazz club would earn a profit. Maybe it is for the reason that Monroe is just the peaceful place, which is suitable to live in, not only for the jazz musicians, but also for the normal people. To the extent that this is the case, then the arguer’s conclusion is not convincing.

        Thirdly, by relying on the national survey the argument depend on the assumption that typical jazz fans reflect the over all pool of fans. Yet the author provides no evidence to support this assumption. Maybe most of the jazz fans are the general jazz listeners, who will not spend nearly $1,000 per year. Even if most of the jazz fans in Monroe are actually typical fans, the nationwide average spends do not necessarily reflect Monroe fan’s spending level. Thus, without eliminating this possibility, the author cannot relay on the national survey to draw the conclusion.

        In sum, the author cannot justify the conclusion on the basis of the scant evidence provided in the article. To bolster the conclusion the author must provide better evidence that people in Monroe are eager to have a jazz club near their home and have the economic condition to support their hobbies. I also need the information about the well-known jazz musicians who live in Monroe are able to perform in the new-built-up club in order to raise the club’s profit.
