TOPIC: ARGUMENT6 - The following was written as a part of an application for a small business loan by a group of developers in the city of Monroe.

"A jazz music club in Monroe would be a tremendously profitable enterprise. Currently, the nearest jazz club is 65 miles away; thus, our proposed club, the C Note, would have the local market all to itself. Plus, jazz is extremely popular in Monroe: over 100,000 people attended Monroe's jazz festival last summer, several well-known jazz musicians live in Monroe, and the highest-rated radio program in Monroe is 'Jazz Nightly,' which airs every weeknight. Finally, a nationwide study indicates that the typical jazz fan spends close to $1,000 per year on jazz entertainment. It is clear that the C Note cannot help but make money."

提纲:
1、        缺少证据证明jazz popular
2、        全国调查草率推广
3、        “typical jazz fan”和”jazz entertainmen”的概念定义。

Before anticipating the C Note can make money, the evidence given in the argument should be examined. First , the arguer fail to convince us jazz is extremely popular in Monroe. In addition, the result of the nationwide study might not fit Monroe. I will discuss the fallacies in turn.

The arguer fails to convince us jazz is extremely popular in Monroe. First, over 100,00 people attended Monroe's jazz festival last summer does not mean the local residents love jazz either. Perhaps most attendants come from other places. Second, there are many reasons could explain that several well -know jazz musicians live in Monroe other than people here love jazz. Perhaps, the natural environment is very quiet , and the musician could live here comfortable and get aspiration, so that they come here from other places. Third, the highest-rated radio program in Monroe is "jazz Nightly" could not mean the most people love jazz, for the possibility only minority people who love jazz listen the programmer ,and the other people don't at all.

Even if we concede that the local residents love jazz, there is another problem of the argument, that is the arguer assumes that the nationwide statistics that indicates that the typical jazz fan spends close to $1,000 per year on jazz entertainment applies equally to Monroe. Yet this is might not be the case, for variety of possible reasons. Perhaps the level of economy development is very difference from one area to another area, and the Monroe might have lower income per household than other areas. If then, we could not anticipate the people spend as much as people in other areas. They might choose other cheaper way to satisfy their entertainment rather than go to the jazz club.

Even if the residents have enough money to spend, the definition of the terminology in the survey is too vague. What does the "typical jazz fan" mean? Does it mean only the people who is crazy about jazz? Or the more people who appreciate and like jazz? Also, what does the "jazz entertainment" mean? It is quite likely involves a lot of entertainment such as spending on jazz disc or jazz instruments, or the payment for ticket for jazz Stars' meeting.

Without take the factors discussed above, the arguer should not conclude that opening C Note jazz club will profitable.
