intimidating大约是“吓唬人的”吧，不知道near the surface又没有准确的翻法，

查到个on the surface ,"表面上看来“的意思，例句: The scheme seems on the surface to be quite practical.

感觉very near the surface 应该就是almost on the surface 的意思。。如说得不对大家批我

on the surface 表示所说的东西是假的（表面上的东西是假的）
near the surface 表示所说的东西是真的

晕，楼上的中计了！此题的正确率全球为15%
一般正确率如此之低的题目肯定是由于出现了极其具有干扰性的选项！
而seriousness 就是此题的干扰选项！
应该是at first, i found her gravity rather intimidating; but later i found that laughter was very near the surface.
后半句意思是，后来我才发现她本质上是开朗的
注意有“BUT"！！！！后面应对前面的内容否定
