Is it necessary and effective for all nations to help support the development of a global university? This argument confirms it, because it is designed to engage students in the process of solving the world's most persistent social problems. But I doubt whether such an university could play its role.
Admittedly, establishing such an university reflects the nice desire of sponsors to deal with the social problems. Since the internet presents itself, it knit the world together in a web of information and phone lines, and then the trend of globalization drives the world's economy more and more blossomy。 At the same time, many global problems attract people's attention, such as the environment pollution, the terrorism and the indigence of energy. If we can develop a global university with the support from different countries, and centralize elite all over the world, and then give them the best education to make sure them of the ability to solve the most persistent social problems, does it not promise the human being a better future?
However, the reality is ruthless, that just can be a fantasy. The current world is so complicated that such an university cannot cultivate the eligible students, who are able to solve the persistent social problems. As a global university, its students come form different countries, and then they are raised within various backgrounds. Someone may be Christian, someone may believe in Islam, and someone may be atheists. Communicating with people having diverse thoughts does broaden one’s insight, but I wonder whether or not such people can make an agreement on the same problem at most time. Taking the feminism as an example, students form Europe and America may highly praise it, but how about the students from Moslem? Absolutely they will oppose it. In addition, even students can agree with each other on some most persistent social problem around the world, will their solutions work? They are not only lacking of enough practical social experience to bring such a solution, but also devoid of the economic and political power to achieve it. Furthermore, considering that some problems concern the advantages and disadvantages of manifold countries, it is just seems to impossible for student to succeed.
On the other hand, thinking over this suggestion more deeply, where is divergence, there must be conflict. A global university supported by manifold countries with various values, will be dominated by some specific countries. May be due to the funds they provide, may be due to the majority of students coming form these countries, these countries can determine the ideology of the university to satisfy their own benifits. Afterwards, it will aggravate the inequality between the developed countries and the developing countries, which has already been a serious global problem. And that's just so satirical, considering the original purpose to establish such an university.
In conclusion, developing a global university is just an unreal conceit. In order to solve the social problems, we must look for other ways. May be promoting the culture intercourse will improve the comprehension among countries.
