The following appeared in a letter to the editor of the Walnut Grove town newspaper. 【17】
"Walnut Grove's town council has advocated switching from EZ Disposal (which has had the contract for trash collection services in Walnut Grove for the past ten years) to ABC Waste, because EZ recently raised its monthly fee from $2,000 to $2,500 a month, whereas ABC's fee is still $2,000. But the town council is mistaken; we should continue using EZ. EZ collects trash twice a week, while ABC collects only once. Moreover, EZ—which, like ABC, currently has a fleet of 20 trucks—has ordered additional trucks. Finally, EZ provides exceptional service: 80 percent of respondents to last year's town survey agreed that they were 'satisfied' with EZ's performance."

In this argument, the arguer claims that Walnut Grove town should continue using EZ Disposal while the Walnut Grove's town council has advocated switching from EZ Disposal to ABC Waste because of the price rising thing from EZ. To support the argument, the arguer cites that EZ collects trash twice a week, while ABC collects only once. The arguer further states that EZ—which, like ABC, currently has a fleet of 20 trucks—has ordered additional trucks. He or she also argues that EZ provides exceptional service: 80 percent of respondents to last year's town survey agreed that they were 'satisfied' with EZ's performance. These statements seem to be  problematic and therefore must be rejected.

First of all, the times of trash collection should not be evaluated as a reason for choosing trash Disposal Company. Although EZ collects trash twice a week while ABC collects only once, it doesn’t mean that Walnut Grove town need twice a week for collecting trash. Maybe, for Walnut Grove town, once a week is enough and efficient. If trash collection for once a week is reasonable why Walnut Grove town does not choose ABC for its lower price.

Furthermore, it is not sure that the new ordered trucks will be used as trash trucks in Walnut Grove town. It is possible that the new trucks are used as normal traffic tools. Even assuming that these trucks are trash trucks, they may provide services in other towns and cities. Since there are so many uncertainties of trucks in EZ, why not switch to ABC?

Finally, there is no evidence presented that the proportion of citizens’ satisfaction in Walnut Grove town is reliable. It is not clear how the survey was performed. The number and the living conditions of those who were surveyed are unknown. Moreover, the satisfaction is not equal to good service performance. Generally, the basic requirement for service is to get customers satisfied. So the high requirement for service should be above satisfaction. Maybe some demands for new methods and higher quality of trash collection service.

In summary, the argument is based on ambiguous evidence that neither proves or disproves anything. Without providing direct evidence that trash collection for twice a week is needed, the new ordered trucks will be used in Walnut Grove town as trash trucks and the survey is convinced, the argument ultimately fails to deliver on its premise.

In this seemingly constructive while maybe misleading argument, the author recommend the Walnut Grove's town to keep on hiring EZ Disposal for their efficiency even its price has raised. To justify this recommendation, the author uses basically three evidences, including the higher frequency of collecting, the newly ordered trucks and the percentage of the inhabitant's satisfaction. How ever, every one of them has its own flaws which together mind the convince of this argument.-风中尘埃的开头

Comparing the two companies—EZ Disposal and ABC Waste, the arguer felt EZ Disposal can give better serves to the town than ABC Waste do.
