The following is a memo from the business manager of Valu-Mart stores. 【117】
"Over 70 percent of the respondents to a recent survey reported that they are required to take more work home with them from the workplace than they were in the past. Since Valu-Mart has not seen impressive sales in its office-supply departments in the past, we should take advantage of this work-at-home trend by increasing at all Valu-Mart stores the stock of home office machines such as printers, small copy machines, paper shredders, and fax machines. We will also increase stock of office supplies such as paper, pens, and staplers. With these changes, our office-supply departments will become the most profitable component of our stores."
1 销售不等于利润
2 以前销售不显著并不是因为没有提供这些产品造成的
In this memo, the business manager from office-supply departments of Valu-Mart stores recommends that the office-supply departments should increase the stock of home office machines as well as office supplies for largely enhancing its profits. To support this recommendation the manager cites a recent survey of respondents suggesting over 70 percent of them are now do more work in their home than they before. This argument is unpersuasive for several reasons.
Firstly, the impressive sales are not equal to more profits. From an economic view, only low cost and high sales may achieve an aim of increasing profits. Given office-supply department may adopt some suggestions like preparing more stock of home office machines and office supplies from which good results such as large sales and unexpected results may all be produced. Because in order to cope with the trends supposed to be available, office-supply department may spend more money on researching and producing home office stuff. More employees may be engaged. By doing all above things, the total costs will be much higher than the sales. Obviously, more profitable can’t be got from these strategies.
Secondly, even the trends of more work should be taken home are real, there are no evidences to cite that increasing home office stuff will make more sales come true. Why Valu-Mart stores have not seen impressive sales in its office-supply departments in the past may attribute to many factors. In another word, some other factors except the types of products may diminish sales. On one hand, ad campaigns for home office stuff may less effective so that total sales are affected. On other hand, distribution tunnels may be not too smooth to increase sales. In a word, it is not proper and reasonable to say that sales will be increased by providing more kinds of home office stuff.
In conclusion, the argument is unconvincing as it stands. To strengthen it, the author must demonstrate that more profits may be achieved by providing home office stuff. And more sales will be affected by increasing such home office machines and office supplies.
