In this memo, the manager suggests that his company should transfer the attention of business from selling cars to leasing them. To support this conclusion, the manager lists three arguments as follow. 1)ten years ago, leasing had become popular in the country of Mohilia .2)in the recent years , the people in increasing number lease new cars rather than purchase new ones. 3)the average age of cars in is six years which accords with the period of leasing cars. This argument contains several logical flaws, which render it unconvincing.
A threshold problem with the argument involves the popularity of leasing cars in the past years cannot necessarily continue in the present or in the future. Perhaps in the next years, buying new cars will play more important role in the market again instead of leasing new cars. Here, the manager fails to consider the truth everything is changing, including people’s behavior of leasing cars. Hence, without scientific reasons, the manager shouldn’t assume the future things similar to the past.
Secondly, the manager fails to point out that data he supports is whether representative or not. Maybe the sample of investigate is restrained in the range of public companies or some special organizations. Theses groups definitely choose to lease new cars due to lacking money. Common sense tells us that long-term car leasing doesn’t fit some individuals who prefers really having their own car forever, not some periods. If the manager cannot provide the exact data , I don’t accept his conclusion.
On the other hand, even if in the future, new car leases would surpass purchases, it does not mean that the company should pay more attention on business of leasing cars. For there are several factors to influence the key job or decision of a company at the same time, single respect about the extent to popularity in the market is not definitely the whole decision to work out in the business of the companies. Perhaps the cost of selling cars is less than leasing them. Perhaps the guarantee of selling cars, such as serves and quality, is more reliable than that of leasing. Perhaps the profit of fewer purchases is far above that of more leases in the market. So, if the manager doesn’t rule out the other possible factors good for the development of the company, he cannot give the suggestion above.
Finally, the length of the average age of cars is not necessarily influence the drivers’ decision about buying or leasing cars. Maybe some drivers never consider the age of a car, but bands, appearances and so on. Therefore, it is not unconvincing that manager builds the consequence between age of cars and leasing or buying.
To sum up, the manager’ argument is unpersuasive as it stands. To strengthen it the manager better evidence these four points above. |
