51. "Education will be truly effective only when it is specifically designed to meet the individual needs and interests of each student."
The speaker claims that truly effective education requires the individual needs and interests of each student should be satisfied. I agree with the assertion on the graduate education level, though when it comes to the primary education, I will stand on the opposite side.
It is true that the education system of graduate school should try their best to meet the interests of each candidate, which can be justified by at least two respects. On the one hand, most graduate students are mature enough to select what they are truly interested in. They can draw a complete image of their study by looking back on what they learned in the past years. Based on the image, they can decide for them which area is worth dedicating to and which areas will attract themselves most. For example, a computer science major may find he/she extremely fascinated with algorithm and programming. In this occasion, he or she can choose software engineering as the subject for further study. On the other hand, since the study in graduate school will have profound influence on the student's vocational career, it is the education's responsibility to meet the student's demands. If, unfortunately, the needs of the students are neglected and they are forced to choose what they are least interested in, they will find their work too boring to enjoy in their later career. Even worse, their interests will be buried for ever--what a tragedy it is.
However, when talking about the primary study, the speaker's assertion is no longer reasonable for the reason that it is impossible for a primary student to choose what he/she is truly interested in and that only satisfying what he/she needs may prevent he/she from developing a complete character.
For one thing, a primary student lack of the ability to decide what he/she is really interested in. They are either too young or too idealistic to have a full understanding of the complex real world. They may find something fascinating at one time. But as they grow up, it is possible that they will give up their former interests and alter to something else for the possible reason that one of his peers is dedicating to it or they just get some ideas from the TV show. When I was in my childhood, I used to learn drawing. But that does not last for too long and I changed to practice calligraphy. Still it did not persist long enough before I got my hands on singing. Today When I look back all of these I realize that none of them is what I am truly interested in. And the unremitting change in interests did not halt before I went to graduate school. Moreover, there is a distinct difference between what you are interested in and what you are good at. This is important because if the primary education just meets the students' interests and encourage the students to devote too much energy to them, it may turn out that the students have limited potential in what appears interesting to them. This is harmful since time has been wasted and even worse, the students' confidence may be hurt.
For another, a primary student can be fully brought up only if he/she can receive a wide range of cultivation, instead of being limited in his/her own interests. Just as the British philosopher Francis Bacon said, "Histories make men wise; poem witty; the mathematics subtle; natural philosophy deep; moral grave; logic and rhetoric to contend". So the students can benefit a lot from going through different subjects. Most of us have such experience that some subjects we used to show no interests in or even resist to learn, may prove beneficial in the future. Therefore, the education system should not just try to meet different demands of the individuals. Instead, it should ensure that the subjects cover all the essential parts which are critical in molding a complete and healthy character of the student. And this philosophy will, other than hamper the student's development, may help the students form their own true interests which can be emphasized at higher education level.
To sum up, the speaker's claim is only limited to graduate education, rather than can be applied to all phrases of the education generally. Because for primary students, they are not qualified to decide what interests to develop and the education system is responsible to give the students a systematic cultivation, which means various courses and projects, to help them develop into a complete person.
